Thursday 12/5/2024, we’ve finally arrived at the end of a long journey to relocate the Household Hazardous Waste Site to this new location. There were many obstacles along the way in order to get this project finished. It took almost nine years to complete, and our Four Rivers staff worked diligently with the City of Rockford staff, along with the IEPA, to make it all happen! There were a lot of moving parts!
There are many people to recognize that were part of this endeavor. First, I want to thank Chairman Chiarelli, Mayor McNamara and City Administrator Todd Cagnoni, along with the County Board and City Council for all their support! I also want to thank our Trustees Rick Pollack, Ben Bernsten, Elmer Jones, Ginger Haas and Richard Mowris for their support on this project.
To our Four Rivers staff, I want to recognize our folks from Engineering for the planning that went on with this project. Especially our Construction Engineer Lee Aschim, along with our Director of Engineering Chris Baer. With their expertise, they designed this location and worked with the City’s Public Works department to engineer a functional location. Lee also has worked with Rob Wilhelmi from the city and the contractor Clean Harbors to gain their input to make this location much better than the previous spot.
I want to thank our Director of Collection System’s Jim Reader and his group for building this site. By doing this, we saved a lot of money for doing the construction in-house! We have done this many times over the years to ensure we keep our cost as low as possible.
This construction at this location was supervised by Brian Markgraf and Kurt Hauser, our Construction and Maintenance Division Managers through their foremen Noah Smith, Warren Fischer and their crews between their regular jobs!
A special thank you to Randy McRae, who managed the entire project to what you see today! Randy was our master carpenter, who recently retired. Randy has rebuilt every building on our plant at least once, if not more over 36 years of service. He was told he couldn’t retire till this project was done. He finished a month early! We thank him for his years of service!
I would have to say, this project was a total team effort between Four Rivers and the City of Rockford! When you see government agencies working together, it is good for our community and it keeps our costs low! This is a win-win for everyone!
The public will find it better access and easier to maneuver into! Hours are Saturday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday Noon to 4:00 pm. New location is at 3315 Kishwaukee! NW corner of Martin road and Kishwaukee. It is now open for business! 🙂
