Sharing an event from the S.I.B.S. newsletter: Supporting Siblings virtual opportunity. Support for siblings as well as parents & caregivers.

This is a group intended for parents/caregivers and siblings of youth with Autism, Developmental Disabilities, and/or other Mental Health Issues.

This Zoom group is facilitated by psychiatrists and trainees at UMass Chan Medical School. Meetings are on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30pm (note: likely 4:30pm Central).

Cost: free
Who is eligible? All caregivers are eligible if the affected child has siblings of any age. Siblings are eligible if they are 6-18 years old and to not have significant behavioral issues of their own.
Can caregivers attend if siblings do not? yes, and vice versa.

Monday, The Arc of Winnebago Boone and Ogle Counties was invited to host a game night at The Arc of Illinois annual Speak Up and Speak Out convention for people with disabilities. The game room was an option for attendees who didn't want to dance until the sun came up.

Chris, Nicholas and Amy were excited to have over 25 individuals come in and enjoy different games, snacks, laugh and socialize. There was a Honey Hunt, ie Dungeon and Dragon type one shot. An Uno game that had to be stopped 45 minutes after the event was supposed to have ended. And Hues and Cues with some really long one-word clues.

A good time was had by all, and we hope to continue to offer this for self-advocate gatherings as a sensory-friendly alternative to the dance.

Chris, Nicholas and Amy are at The Arc of Illinois Speak Up Speak Out event. We were able to connect with Elliot Fights Dravet . It’s a great organization doing super work around epilepsy, specifically Dravet syndrome.
If you’ve never heard of it check it out. Epilepsy affects so many and the more we get the word out the better.

A heartfelt thank you to Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation for helping our team become certified in Mental Health First Aid. This training gave us valuable tools to recognize when someone may be struggling and respond with care and support. We are so grateful for their time, knowledge, and commitment to mental health in our community.

annually through Home-Based Support Services and other programs designed to assist individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live as independently as possible and be integrated into the community.
