We're excited to share the news that we were awarded a $20,184 Emergency Safety and Security Grant (ESSG) from HUD! The ESSG is used to address safety and security needs, and this grant will be used to upgrade the lighting behind the Johnston Garden (South Beloit) and D’Agnolo Garden (Rockton) sites.

The ESSG is extremely competitive. Out of 3,300 housing authorities in the nation, HUD only awarded it to 46 housing authorities, and we were the only one to receive it in Illinois. We very much want to thank Deputy Director Deb Alfredson and Resident Services Coordinator Emily Schwartz for all their work putting together the application!

ATTENTION LANDLORDS: Do you own a rental property with 1–4 units that is occupied by families receiving rental assistance? The Resiliency Program may be able to help with important improvements that support safe, healthy, and resilient housing.

The Resiliency Program can assist with:
• Replacement of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
• Radon mitigation, when required

This program was made possible through funding provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and is designed to help improve housing conditions for residents and strengthen our community’s housing stock.

If your rental property needs HVAC upgrades or other eligible improvements, learn more about how the Resiliency Program may be able to help.

In Getting Ahead, people learn how the financial system really works. This photo shows a conversation about systemic predators, the lenders and products designed to pull people in, drain their money, and keep them stuck.

Most people in the room have dealt with at least one of them. Payday loans. Rent to own. Overdraft cycles. Credit repair scams. High interest stores. The traps that look helpful in the moment and end up costing hundreds or thousands.

When people break these systems down together, something important happens. They see the pattern. They understand the tactics. They stop carrying the shame that never belonged to them in the first place. And they start making decisions with clear information instead of pressure or fear.

Getting Ahead gives people the tools, the language, and the confidence to protect themselves from predatory lending and build a more stable path forward. This is the kind of awareness that changes lives.

If you want to join the next class, reach out! We want to connect you with a resource that will change how you understand the world you’re navigating every day.
