Many thanks to Mr. Nicholson and the community at Ashley Chapel who hosted the town hall last night.
At one point the question was raised: “If money was not an issue, what would you do to “fix” our communities!”
My initial response was that money, many times, is NOT the resolution to our problems. Many times the love of money and mismanagement thereof leads to far more problems.
However, there are some things that are within our power and within our budget, if managed properly - with some creative thinkers in our community - including LOCAL, small business ingenuity partnering with our School system leaders, local municipalities and local churches. Here are a two things that we can accomplish:
1. Train families from all of our local churches to be foster parents. As Robby Hall/DSS and I discussed this week, there is a major need for help in this area with kids sleeping in DSS administration facilities because of a lack of foster parents. We can offer HOPE to these kids.
2. Connecting LOCAL small business talent and needs with the vision of RCS and RCC administration, we can and should create a public TRADE high school for the primary purpose of building the Richmond County workforce. Things like welding, plumbing, vehicle maintenance/mechanics, aviation, electrical, masonry, building, sewing, homemaking, budgeting.
I’ll conclude that this debate was held on the Eve of Good Friday - the pivotal moment of the world. As I shared with the fine people in Ashley Chapel, during this week, we remember when hope seemed lost and society seemed to slip over the edge in despair. Yet, in that moment, much like ours, we tend to open ourselves to help from God above.
As I shared this with my friends in Ashley Chapel last night, I’m ever-more reminded that this is the season when we should expect a resurrection of dreams and of communities. There is hope!
