This spring, students from NC State University's Social Innovation Fellows program traveled to the Dominican Republic to see firsthand how community pharmacies supported by Medicines for Humanity are expanding access to healthcare in rural batey communities.

These pharmacies help families access medications closer to home, continue treatment between mobile clinic visits, and receive care from trusted community members.

This reflection, written by Victoria Fuda, a former NC State Social Innovation Fellow and current Medicines for Humanity team member, shares more about the people behind this work, the impact these pharmacies have on daily life, and what students learned by experiencing it firsthand.

The WHO has declared this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Bundibugyo strain currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. Early detection and strong infection prevention measures remain our most effective tools.

Preparedness saves lives, and we remain committed to strengthening response capacity across South Kivu as the situation develops.

Most latrines don’t last 10 years.

This one did.

In Los Montones, Dominican Republic, long-term impact came from something simple: community ownership.

When people help build something, they’re more likely to protect it and sustain it over time.

Built through a partnership with Medicines For Humanity.

Small investments. Long-term impact.

A little Friday joy for your feed ❤️

This is Adn. At a recent mobile clinic visit in a batey in the Dominican Republic, he stepped on the scale, heard his weight, and started smiling and clapping.

Because that number means he’s healthy!

It’s a simple moment, but it represents so much. Consistent care, support over time, and the chance for a child to grow and thrive.

Through Learning for Humanity, we recently completed our Mental Health Training for Community Health Workers.

What started as short online lessons grew into something much deeper, a space for reflection, healing, and real personal growth. Many participants shared that the tools didn’t just support their work, but also helped them navigate their own challenges and emotions in daily life.

Our closing session was incredibly moving. There were tears, laughter, hugs, and powerful stories of change. It was a reminder of how much strength, vulnerability, and resilience exists within this group.

When we invest in the wellbeing of those who care for others, we don’t just build skills, we strengthen entire communities from the inside out.

Looking for a great way to support the community and get in front of a wide audience? Sponsorship opportunities are now open for our Annual Golf Tournament!

This is one of our favorite days of the year- bringing together friends, partners, and supporters for a fun day on the course! We’re always so grateful for everyone who helps make it possible year after year.

Sponsoring is a meaningful way to stay involved, support the work we do, and share your organization with a broad and engaged audience.

If you’ve joined us before, we’d love to have you back. And if this would be your first time, we’d be excited to have you be part of it.

The NC State Social Innovation Fellows are being recognized today at NC State’s Sustainability Showcase, and we’re proud to celebrate their work with Medicines for Humanity.

They supported our Small Pharmacies Program in the rural bateys of the Dominican Republic, where small pharmacies—majority run by local women—help bring essential medicines closer to the communities that need them most.

Working alongside our team, they are helping explore how AI tools can support inventory and restocking in a practical way that fits the realities of daily life in these pharmacies.

We’re grateful for their dedication and thoughtful approach!
