The Rockland Police Department regrets to inform our community that retired Deputy Chief Barry Ashton has passed away.

Barry Ashton served as a full-time police officer for 32 years. He began his career in 1977 and retired as Deputy Chief in 2009. Barry proudly served as a lieutenant for two decades and earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College.

Barry was a longtime member of the Honor Guard and took great pride in his trips to Washington for National Police Week, where he made several lifelong friends. He was also honored to represent the Rockland Police Department while working security details at three Olympic Games: 1996 Summer Olympics, 2002 Winter Olympics, and 2010 Winter Olympics.

Barry was a staple in the Town of Rockland, especially while working construction details. He loved directing traffic and speaking with residents throughout the community. Around the holidays, Barry became especially well known for wearing a Santa hat and Mickey Mouse gloves while working details — something that brought smiles to many faces over the years.

Barry will be deeply missed by his fellow retired officers, current members of the department, and the many residents whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for all you did for Rockland.
