This is an emergency message from the Town of Rockland.
Town officials, including Emergency Management, Fire, Police, Highway, and all municipal departments, are actively preparing for a major blizzard expected to impact Rockland beginning late Sunday night and continuing through Monday morning.
The South Shore region is forecast to receive 18 inches or more of snow, accompanied by damaging winds, whiteout conditions, and snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour at the height of the storm. These conditions will make travel extremely dangerous and may render roads impassable.
Residents must take this storm seriously and complete all storm preparations immediately.
There is a high probability of extended power outages. National Grid has advised that power may be out for more than 72 hours after the storm. Charge all cell phones and essential electronic devices before Sunday evening. Ensure you have batteries, flashlights, necessary medications, food, water, and other critical supplies.
The winter parking ban is in effect. There is no on-street parking allowed anywhere in town Sunday night through Monday. Vehicles parked on public roadways will be towed without exception to allow for safe and effective snow removal operations.
Trash pickup this week will be delayed by one day, consistent with a holiday schedule.
During the storm, residents are directed to remain indoors and avoid all unnecessary travel. Emergency vehicles and plow operators must have clear access to roadways.
Expect the possibility of downed trees, limbs, and power lines. Never approach any downed wire. Telephone and cable wires may be energized if they come into contact with power lines. Call 911 immediately to report downed wires or life-threatening hazards.
If you lose power, never operate a gasoline-powered generator indoors, in a garage, or in a shed. Generators produce deadly carbon monoxide. Use extreme caution with candles and never leave a lit candle unattended, especially around children.
Town officials will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed.
Prepare now. Stay off the roads. Stay safe.
