🚧 SR 66 CLOSURE — WEEK 2 UPDATE 🚧

We are now completed the second week of the SR 66 closure, and the detour continues to create a significant amount of additional traffic and enforcement activity in Ohio and Luce Townships.

The numbers below reflect activity from August 22 through August 30.

During that time, in the detour area alone, our deputies:
Responded to 18 traffic hazard calls
Responded to 9 crashes/slide-offs
Conducted 68 traffic stops
Issued 40 warnings
Issued 39 citations

Of those citations, 10 were issued to semi drivers for Disobeying a Traffic Control Device under IC 9-21-8-41.

We understand the seriousness of issuing a moving violation to a commercial driver and the effect it can have on a CDL. We do not take that lightly.

However, after numerous warning signs, road signs, social media posts, photographs, and an increased law enforcement presence, we are at the point where enforcement is necessary. The restrictions are there for a reason — to keep motorists safe and to protect roadways that were not designed to handle this volume and type of traffic.

And these numbers only represent the trucks we actually catch. They do not include the semis that make it through the restricted areas before a deputy is available to intercept them. We know the actual number is higher.

For some perspective, during this same period, August 22–30, countywide, our deputies:
• Handled 298 dispatched community contacts/details
• Conducted 94 traffic stops
• Issued 53 warnings
• Issued 53 citations
• Responded to 24 traffic hazards
• Responded to 15 crashes/slide-offs

Spencer County covers approximately 401 square miles, and depending on the day and shift, we generally have only 2, 3, or 4 deputies working to cover the entire county.

We are continuing to pay overtime for additional deputies to specifically patrol the detour area, while our regularly scheduled deputies continue answering calls and providing coverage throughout the rest of the county.

Our team has been busy, but they continue to work hard to protect our citizens and keep traffic moving as safely as possible.

We appreciate everyone who has followed the posted detour, slowed down, shown patience, and helped us get through this closure safely.

📢 Appointment of 911 Director – Mickey Freeman

We are proud to announce the appointment of Mickey Freeman as the new Director of the Spencer County 911 Dispatch Center.

Mickey’s experience behind the dispatch console, along with her responsibilities as our IDACS Coordinator, made her a natural choice for this position. She understands firsthand the demands placed on our dispatchers and the important role they play in keeping our deputies, first responders and citizens safe.

Mickey is a 2015 graduate of South Spencer High School. She and her husband, Garrett Freeman, live in Chrisney with their children. The Freeman family is very active in our local sports community, and when Mickey isn't working, you will usually find her spending time with her family and enjoying the outdoors.

Mickey has shown a strong dedication to the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office and our 911 Dispatch Center. She brings experience, commitment and a genuine desire to see our dispatch center and its employees succeed.

Beyond her professional abilities, Mickey has a kind heart and a generous nature. She cares about the people she works with and the community she serves, and those qualities make her a tremendous asset to our department.

We have great confidence in Mickey as she takes on this leadership role, and we are looking forward to seeing our 911 Dispatch Center continue to grow under her direction.

🚧 DAY 9 OF THE SR 66 CHAOS… I MEAN, CLOSURE 🚧

We had a little break over the weekend with things being somewhat quieter, but now that the work week is back underway, so is the traffic.

Today’s pictures are good examples of why we continue asking everyone to follow the posted detour — one truck attempting to weave through a barricade and a loaded semi in the ditch in Midway.

🚛 SEMI DRIVERS: Please use the official SR 66 detour. And if you know other drivers, trucking companies or dispatchers traveling through our area, please help us spread the word. Our county roads are simply not designed to handle this amount of heavy truck traffic.

To our local residents — we know this is frustrating. Our deputies are doing their best to patrol the affected areas, address prohibited semi traffic and slow down speeders while still providing law enforcement coverage to the rest of Spencer County.

We can't be everywhere at once, but we are out there, we are paying attention, and we are doing everything we can to keep our citizens safe.

Please slow down, follow the signs and use the designated detour.

DAY 5 OF THE SR 66 CLOSURE… AND WHO KNEW 5 DAYS COULD FEEL THIS LONG?

We are officially on Day 5, and to say things have been a little chaotic would be an understatement.

Since the closure began, our deputies have been busy — very busy — particularly in and around the detour areas.

📊 Here’s what the first 5 days have looked like:

🚔 78 traffic stops🎫
40 citations issued⚠️
44 warnings issued💥
21 property-damage crashes or slide-offs🚧
15 traffic-hazard complaints involving vehicles stuck in ditches or otherwise blocking roadways

And while all of that has been happening around the detours, the rest of Spencer County didn't stop needing us.

During these same five days, our deputies have handled 185 calls for service countywide — calls that we normally have just 2–3 deputies at a time covering across the entire county.

Because of the increased workload, four of our deputies have volunteered to work a combined 30 hours of paid overtime to provide additional coverage. I sincerely appreciate them stepping up. Those extra hours mean more deputies on the road, quicker responses, and better coverage for our citizens while we work through this closure.

Now for my little Day 5 public-service announcement… 😁

If the GPS tells you to take a tiny county road you've never heard of, maybe don't trust it with your whole heart.

If the sign says NO TRUCKS — it means no trucks.

If the speed limit says 35 MPH — that's not a suggestion.

And if the official detour seems longer — that's because it probably is. But it was designed to handle the traffic.

All joking aside, our biggest concern is safety. These county roads have families, school buses, farm equipment, narrow shoulders, hills, curves and driveways. They simply were not designed to become highways overnight.

We will continue doing everything we can to keep traffic moving and keep our citizens safe.
At this rate, we're going to know every ditch in Spencer County on a first-name basis before this is over.

Please slow down, pay attention, follow the posted detours, and give our deputies, highway crews, emergency responders — and each other — a little patience.

County Highway Department is continuing to place and adjust Jersey barriers on county roads to help control traffic and protect our roads during the SR 66 closure.

🚛 SEMI TRAFFIC: Please follow the official posted detour. County roads are NOT the detour and are not designed to handle continuous heavy truck traffic.

🚗 PASSENGER VEHICLES: Please use extra caution. With the increased traffic, barriers, narrow county roads, school buses, farm equipment, and local residents coming in and out of driveways, slow down and pay attention.

These measures are being put in place for everyone’s safety and to protect our county roads during the closure.

We know 56 more days sounds like a long time, but we’ll get through it!

Follow the signs. Follow the detour. Slow down. Stay safe.

🚧 DAY 2 OF THE SR 66 CLOSURE 🚧
Day 2 is here, and we’re already seeing an increase in traffic on our county roads.
A friendly reminder to semi-truck drivers: please follow the official posted detour. Our county roads were not designed to handle this amount of heavy truck traffic and we will be out strictly enforcing traffic regulations.
⚠️ Make sure we are following speed limit signs on CR 200 N. Please slow down and drive safely.
🚌 School is also in session. Please be especially cautious around school buses, bus stops, students, and families traveling these roads during school hours.
We understand the official detour may take longer, but we ask everyone to please be patient and follow the designated route. Safety needs to come first for everyone using our roads.
We have approximately 58 more days to go, so let’s work together, slow down, and keep our community safe.

🚧 SR 66 ROAD CLOSURE — PLEASE HELP US KEEP EVERYONE SAFE 🚧

Well… Day 1 of the SR 66 closure, and we can already tell it’s going to be a LONG 60 days! 😅
We understand the official detour is long and inconvenient, and we know everyone is trying to find the quickest way around the closure. We’re asking everyone to please be patient and give yourself a little extra time.

Our biggest concern right now is semi traffic. We are seeing semi trucks leave the official detour and travel county roads that simply are not designed for heavy truck traffic. This creates dangerous situations on narrow roads, hills, curves, and intersections.

🚛 Semi drivers — PLEASE follow the posted official detour. We know it adds time to your trip, but the detour was established for a reason. Following it will help keep you, our residents, and everyone else traveling these roads safe.

And a reminder for everyone using county roads:
⚠️ The speed limit on CR 200 W is 35 MPH.
⚠️ County roads have reduced speed limits. Unless you see a posted sign stating otherwise, plan on 35 MPH.

🚌 We will also have school buses traveling these roadways. Please be especially careful during the morning and afternoon school bus hours. Slow down, allow extra following distance, watch for buses stopping to pick up or drop off children, and be prepared for increased student and parent traffic.

With the additional detour traffic, those morning and afternoon hours are going to require a little extra attention and patience from everyone.
Please slow down, watch for oncoming vehicles, expect farm equipment and local traffic, and use a little extra patience.

We know this closure is frustrating. It’s going to affect residents, businesses, school traffic, farmers, truck drivers, and everyone traveling through the area for the next couple of months.
We’ll get through these 60 days together — but we need everyone to slow down, follow the detour, watch out for our school buses and kids, and pack a little extra patience before leaving home. 😊
