🌟Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Army! ♥️🤍💙

On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies—marking the birth of what would become the United States Army.

On June 14, 2026, we honor 251 years of that legacy.

From the Revolutionary War to today, the Army has stood through every era of American history, shaped by sacrifice, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to defend the nation. This year’s Army Birthday theme, “This We’ll Defend,” reflects a promise that has carried through generations of Soldiers, past and present.

Today, we recognize not just a milestone, but the people behind it: the Soldiers who have served, those currently in uniform, and the families and communities who stand beside them.

TODAY IS FLAG DAY

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14th in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday.

It's also a great day to pray for our country and it's leadership!
🇺🇸 GOD BLESS AMERICA! 🇺🇸

📚🌟 SPOTLIGHT DEPARTMENT OF THE MONTH 🌟📚

Please join us in congratulating the Aransas County Public Library as our June Spotlight Department of the Month! 🎉👏

For more than 70 years since the 1950s, the Aransas County Public Library has been a cornerstone of learning, discovery, and community connection. Its mission is to identify, acquire, organize, publicize, and disseminate resources that support lifelong learning, personal growth, business and economic development, and an improved quality of life through access to cultural and recreational materials. 📖❤️

But the library is so much more than books—it is a true community hub offering:
💻 Public computers, printing, and free internet access
📶 Free Wi-Fi for library card holders
📚 Books, e-books, and audiobooks for all ages
👧 Children’s story times and seasonal reading programs
🎨 Teen and family activities, workshops, and community events
🔎 Research assistance and librarian support
🤝 Community gathering space supported by the Friends of the Library

🦕☀️ This summer, families are invited to join “Unearth a Story”, the Summer Reading Program running June 1 – July 31, featuring dinosaur-themed fun, crafts, story times, special guests, and reading incentives to keep kids learning all summer long!

A huge THANK YOU to the dedicated team who keeps the library running every day:

📚 Iris Sanchez – Library Director (41 years of service, started Nov. 1985)
Iris began her career as a teen library clerk and rose through the ranks to Library Director. She oversees budget and finances, policy development, staff management, strategic planning, patron services, and works closely with the Friends of the Library to continually enhance library services.

📚 Melodee Field – Library Assistant (24 years, started Jan. 2002)
Melodee leads Youth and Family Services, including book ordering, purchasing, and cataloging for all age groups. She oversees children’s programming, community outreach, grant writing, and helps create engaging programs year-round. She also helped bring the beautiful library garden to life through the Tocker Foundation Grant (2020). During summer reading, she becomes “Miz Melodee,” helping lead a program that serves an average of 35 kids each summer.

📚 Jessica Solis – Assistant Librarian (24 years, started Dec. 2002)
Jessica is a vital part of daily operations and often described as Iris’s right hand. She prepares displays, promotes library events, maintains records and statistics, handles cataloging and processing, manages supplies and interlibrary loans, coordinates adult programs, and supports grant writing. She is also the library’s “computer guru,” assisting patrons with technology, e-books, online databases, and troubleshooting.

📚 Nona Owens-Gravell – Clerical Staff (21 years, started Jan. 2005)
Nona serves as front-line staff supporting daily circulation and customer service. She assists patrons with library cards, check-outs and renewals, fines and fees, phone inquiries, shelving, organizing materials, and supporting library programs and events. She is a key part of keeping daily operations running smoothly.

📚 Brianna King – Clerical Staff (3 years, started Jan. 2023)
Brianna works alongside Nona as part of the library’s front desk team. She assists patrons with circulation services, library cards, materials organization, phones, shelving, and supporting programs and events—helping ensure every visitor receives friendly and efficient service.

Together, this small but mighty team wears many hats, works seamlessly together, and is always ready to jump in wherever needed to serve the residents of Aransas County. ❤️📖

Thank you for your dedication, heart, and service to our community. Congratulations again to the Aransas County Public Library! 🎉🏆
