Supporting a community means supporting the people who serve it every day. Boultinghouse Funeral Home was honored to provide the Spencer County Coroner’s Office with a new stretcher and custom American flag cover to help meet an important need.

For more than 130 years, serving Spencer County has meant more than caring for families—it means being a neighbor, a partner, and helping wherever we can. 🇺🇸

There is a heavy side to this work and I’ve talked about it because it’s real, and because pretending it doesn’t affect us doesn’t help anyone.

But there is another side of working in the death industry that deserves to be talked about just as much.

The impact we have.

We meet families on days they will remember for the rest of their lives.

We walk into their stories at a moment they never asked for, and sometimes, for a little while, they become part of ours too.

We help answer questions when everything feels uncertain.

We give names to what happened.

We explain what comes next.

We return belongings that suddenly mean more than they ever did before.

We listen to stories about the person we may have only known as a decedent - and get to know them as a parent, a child, a spouse, a sibling, a best friend.

Sometimes we provide the answer a family desperately needed.

Sometimes there simply isn’t an answer, and what we can give them instead is honesty, compassion, and the reassurance that their person mattered to us.

And every once in a while, someone stays with you.

A family you still think about years later.
A name you never forget.

A story that changed the way you do this job.

We may meet people on one of the worst days of their lives, but we have the opportunity to make that day just a little less difficult.

There is something incredibly meaningful about being trusted with that responsibility.

We don’t just investigate death.

We help tell the final chapter of someone’s life.

We help families understand it.

We advocate for the person who can no longer speak for themselves.

And sometimes, without even realizing it, we become part of a family’s story forever - just as they become part of ours.

That is the beautiful side of being a Last Responder.

For over 130 years, Boultinghouse Funeral Home has proudly served the community with dedication, compassion, and a commitment to those we are honored to serve. Our commitment to partnership extends to working closely with local government agencies and supporting the vital services they provide to our community.

Recently, Boultinghouse Funeral Home was pleased to address a need identified by Spencer County Coroner Layla Thayer for additional transportation equipment. Boultinghouse Funeral Home provided a new stretcher, complete with a custom cot cover featuring the American flag as a tribute to and in honor of our nation’s veterans.

The photograph shows Boultinghouse Funeral Home owner’s Evan and Layla Thayer delivering the equipment to the Spencer County Coroner’s Office in support of the communities they serve.

This contribution reflects Boultinghouse Funeral Home’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Spencer County Coroner’s Office and the essential services provided to the citizens of Spencer County. We are proud to partner with those who serve our community and remain committed to providing support wherever we can.

Friendly reminder- check on your people.

Not just the ones who tell you they’re struggling.

Check on the strong ones.

The funny ones.

The dependable ones.

The ones who always answer the phone.

The ones who show up when everyone else needs help.

The ones who say, “I’m fine.”

In the medicolegal death investigation and death care professions, we spend our careers stepping into some of the hardest moments of other people’s lives. And sometimes we get so good at carrying the weight that nobody realizes how heavy it has become.

So send the text. Make the call. Grab the coffee.

And don’t stop at “How are you?”

Ask again. Sit with them. Listen without trying to fix it. Remind them they don’t have to carry everything alone.

Sometimes checking on your people is nothing more than saying:

“Hey. I was thinking about you. How are you really doing?”

That small moment of connection may matter more than you will ever know.

Strong people need support too.

Check on your people.

Then check on them again. 🖤💜
