Hot Weather Safety Tips During Extreme Heat

As Massachusetts experiences extreme heat this week, residents are encouraged to take precautions to stay safe.

Staying properly hydrated is one of the most important ways to prevent heat-related illness. Avoid sugary drinks, caffeine and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration. Instead, drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you are sweating heavily, consider replenishing electrolytes with a sports drink.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat-related illness, which can become life-threatening if left untreated. Check in on family members, friends and neighbors, especially older adults, young children and those with chronic medical conditions.

If someone experiences symptoms such as confusion, slurred speech, a very high body temperature, loss of consciousness, hot and dry skin, or excessive sweating, call 911 immediately and stay with them until help arrives.

During periods of extreme heat, fans alone may not be enough to prevent heat-related illness. Take cool showers or baths when possible and spend time in an air-conditioned location. If your home does not have air conditioning, consider visiting a cooling center, public library, shopping mall or another air-conditioned public building.

Stay indoors when possible, and limit exercise and outdoor activities to the mornings and evenings. If you must be outside, be sure to hydrate, rest often in the shade, use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Residents Reminded to Celebrate Safely, Fireworks are Illegal Statewide

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, we would like to remind residents to celebrate safely and note that the recreational use of fireworks is illegal in Massachusetts.

While the Fourth of July is meant for celebration, residents should celebrate safely. If you are attending a party, remember to drink responsibly and never operate a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

If swimming, ensure that no child swims alone, and be mindful of changes in open-water conditions, such as currents or cold water temperatures. When boating, always wear a life jacket.

Additionally, fireworks should be left to the professionals.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, there have been more than 550 fires and explosions involving illegal fireworks in Massachusetts in the past five years. Six firefighters were injured in these incidents, and damages were estimated at nearly $1 million.

The possession, use and sale of fireworks without a professional license is against the law in Massachusetts and punishable by confiscation, fine or imprisonment. Fines range from $100 to $1,000, and some violations could carry a one-year prison sentence.

Front Beach Sanitary Sewer Overflow - Final Update
6/26/26 9:15AM

The Town, with the assistance of contractors, was able to complete the necessary repairs at approximately 2:00 AM 6/26/26. The road was repaired and reopened around 5:00AM. As previously stated, pump trucks were bypassing the section being repaired, so no additional discharge has occurred since the previous update. The road is now open to traffic and the Town will continue to monitor the area for other potential failure points. Front Beach remains closed to swimming pending results of testing that will occur today; results are expected late tomorrow 6/27/26. This is the final update on this SSO.

Front Beach Sanitary Sewer Overflow Update:
6/25/2026 9:30 PM

The Town was able utilize pump trucks to bypass the broken pressure line and shut off the
pumps at the Back Beach pump station at 6 PM. This bypass will remain in place until the repair
is complete and therefore the SSO is finished. The Town will still report when the fix is
completed for awareness of relevant agencies and the general public. In total, the SSO
discharged 4200 gallons. The Town will continue to monitor this pipe for other potential failure
locations and make repairs accordingly.

Front Beach remains closed.
