If you run out of meds because the VA is delayed on getting them to you.

Fastest Ways to Get Medication When the VA Is Delayed

1. Go to a VA-Approved Urgent Care (Often the fastest same-day option)

A veteran enrolled in VA health care can go to an in-network urgent care clinic without prior authorization. The provider can prescribe medication, and the prescription can be filled at a community pharmacy the same day.
• VA covers the visit under the MISSION Act urgent care benefit.
• The pharmacy can provide up to about a 14-day supply while the VA processes the long-term refill.

This is usually the fastest legitimate route for mental health meds.

2. Telehealth or Same-Day VA Nurse Line

A veteran can call the VA and ask for VA Health Connect or the nurse triage line. They can often arrange same-day telehealth with a provider who can issue a prescription.

Typical path:
1. Call the local VA medical center
2. Select the nurse triage option
3. Request urgent medication continuation

3. Ask the Pharmacist for an Emergency Supply

Many states allow pharmacists to dispense a short emergency refill when a patient runs out of medication and cannot reach the prescriber.

This usually works best if:
• The veteran has the existing prescription bottle
• It’s a maintenance medication (not always possible with controlled meds)

4. Walk-In Mental Health Crisis or ER

If the veteran is unstable or at risk, they should go to:
• A mental health crisis center
• Emergency room

They can evaluate and prescribe medication immediately.

If the situation involves suicidal thoughts, call 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.
