Uterine fibroids affect up to 80% of women, yet federal research funding remains remarkably low. The Maryland Commission for Women is proud to amplify the vital leadership of Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks as she works to change that. 🩺

Partnering with actress and advocate Lupita Nyong'o, Senator Alsobrooks is leading the charge on the bipartisan U-FIGHT Act to expand research, early screening, and healthcare support nationwide.

✨ A little Commission behind the scenes! ✨

Last week, we brought together the Collaborative to Advance Over-the-Counter Birth Control Coverage for its July meeting.
Since October, this incredible group of experts and stakeholders has been meeting every other month to help make full, comprehensive access to over-the-counter birth control a reality in Maryland.

This month's meeting featured the Maryland Department of Health, which shared information about its reproductive health programs that provide free and low-cost care to Marylanders. The presentation led to a great discussion about how we can expand access to OTC birth control products for uninsured Marylanders.

Want to see the conversation for yourself? 🎥 You can watch this meeting—and all past Collaborative meetings—on the Commission's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com//streams

We hope you'll join us again for our next meeting in September!

The Maryland Commission for Women thanks all the women who ran for public office in yesterday's primary elections! We congratulate the 6 women from across the state who won County Executive primary races yesterday. We also express concern over the shockingly low number of women likely to serve in the Maryland Senate in 2027. Read our full election update here:

The Maryland Senate will have only about 11 women next term, down from a peak of 16 women in 2002. Critical underrepresentation of women of color and Republican women in the Maryland Senate will continue. There will be no Latina or AAPI women, and potentially only three Black women.
