NIH is proposing major changes to how grant application scores are reported—and researchers have an opportunity to weigh in.

Under the proposal, scored applications would be grouped into three broad categories: “Most Competitive,” “Competitive,” and “Not Discussed.” NIH would no longer provide the final overall impact score or percentile to applicants, their institutions, NIH program staff, or other relevant parties.

For researchers deciding whether and how to revise an unfunded application, losing that information could make it much harder to understand where a proposal actually stands.

Comments are due October 13, 2026.
