Last night, I heard a Baptist preacher talk about how many newly freed African Americans struggled to find their family members after slavery was outlawed. Families had been separated, and people had their names changed when they were sold, stripping away their identity and forcing them to begin their lives all over again.

He tied that into current events, mentioning that attacks on people's identity and voice don't always look the same. We are seeing efforts to weaken the political power of African American communities through practices like racial gerrymandering, especially after key protections of the Voting Rights Act were gutted by the Supreme Court.

It's been 161 years since General Order No. 3 was read in Galveston, announcing that more than 250,000 enslaved Texans were free. Juneteenth is a celebration of that freedom, but also a reminder that protecting equal rights is a constant battle.

HCR 6, which designated Galveston as the official Juneteenth Capital of Texas through 2035, passed during the 89th Legislature, but not without opposition from five Republican representatives, including 's own Katrina Pierson. To echo yesterday's words, "There is no principle that she isn't willing to abandon for the right price".

I stand with members of our African American communities, recognizing the constant pursuit for true equality. We've got a long way to go, but we'll get there together.

Protecting the mental health of our students means giving them the resources and safeguards they need to succeed. My opponent, Katrina Pierson, says she's passionate about mental health public policy on her ballotpedia page, but her voting record tells a different story. This weekend, I had the opportunity to team up with Dan Barrios for Congress (TX-32) in the morning, try some of his breakfast tacos, and meet with some new folks in Rockwall County. A few hours later, I got to be part of the Juneteenth celebrations in Wylie and spent some time with Elect Evan Hunt (TX-03) and Citizens For Carraway (HD89). This is what it's all about: getting to know more of our communities and what matters most to them, while doing so with great friends. Texans deserve leaders that care.

We can love the energy, the slogans, and the applause. But elections are about service, responsibility, and the courage to do the work for the people.
