Please see screenshot statement in comments from director of another agency on importance of learning more about EMS finance and sustainability.

Colorado EMS is essential.

Today marks an important milestone for emergency medical services across our state.

Colorado law now formally recognizes EMS as an essential service and an integral part of Colorado’s healthcare infrastructure.

From our largest cities to our rural and frontier communities, EMTs, paramedics, ambulance services, air-medical teams, educators, medical directors and EMS leaders are there when Colorado needs them.

Today, we celebrate that recognition—and everyone who makes Colorado EMS possible.

Officially recognized. Always essential.

Just 11 days after learning CPR, an 11-year-old girl used it to save her dad's life.

Vada Carawan was at home when her father, Clinton, began complaining of severe chest pain.

Then he suddenly collapsed and struggled to breathe.

Vada immediately called 911.

But she didn't stop there.

The young Girl Scout got beside her father and began chest compressions, using the CPR skills she had learned at a Scout meeting less than two weeks earlier.

For five to seven minutes, Vada continued CPR while a dispatcher helped her keep the rhythm.

She was terrified, but she refused to stop.

"I didn't really think about it," Vada recalled. "I was just like, I need to save my dad's life."

Emergency crews eventually arrived and rushed Clinton to the hospital.

Doctors later explained that Vada's CPR kept blood flowing to her father's brain until his heart could be restarted.

"Unquestionably, she saved his life that night," cardiologist Dr. Deepak Talreja said.

The timing was remarkable.

During her CPR training just 11 days earlier, Vada had successfully practiced the lifesaving technique on a training mannequin.

Days later, the lesson became real.

Clinton survived and has since made major changes to his lifestyle, including quitting smoking and improving his eating habits.

Vada's mother proudly described her daughter in the simplest way.

"She got to be his hero."

Vada may only be 11, but her courage is a powerful reminder that you're never too young to learn something that could one day save a life.
