Below is a public notification regarding a barricade/hostage situation at Candlewood Apartments that ended peacefully earlier today in Rocky Mount.

The Rocky Mount Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded today to Candlewood Apartments in Rocky Mount regarding a barricade/hostage situation involving an adult male and a juvenile.

The male subject had barricaded himself inside a residence with the juvenile, who is the daughter of the subject’s roommate. Law enforcement established communication with the subject and began negotiations.

During the course of those negotiations, the juvenile was safely released from the residence and reunited with her mother.

Law enforcement negotiators continued communicating with the male subject following the juvenile’s release. After continued negotiations, the subject was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Mitchell Dehaven, 33, was arrested and charged with threats to bomb, burn, or destroy, in violation of Virginia Code § 18.2-83; felony destruction of property, in violation of Virginia Code § 18.2-137; and felony abduction.

The Rocky Mount Police Department would like to thank the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin County Public Safety for their response, assistance, and cooperation in bringing this situation to a safe and peaceful resolution.

Edit: Town of Rocky Mount offices will now close on Friday, September 4 at 12pm. Town offices will reopen on Tuesday, September 8 at 8am.

🚧North Main Street from Circle Drive to Sycamore Street is currently blocked due to a tractor-trailer accident.

Motorists are asked to use caution in the area and seek alternate routes until the roadway can be cleared. We anticipate that it may take several hours to remove the vehicle and make the roadway passable.

Please avoid the area if possible and allow emergency and cleanup crews room to work.

🚧Traffic Notice – Route 40 (Old Franklin Turnpike) Eastbound

Reminder: Construction work is still underway as crews are completing required ADA ramp and crosswalk improvements at the intersection of Market Place Dr. and Old Franklin Turnpike.

Some of the remaining work will require a lane closure of the right eastbound lane. Please use caution when traveling through the work zone, watch for workers and equipment, and expect minor delays. We appreciate your patience as these accessibility improvements are completed.

The 26th Annual Warren Street Festival is this Saturday at the Rocky Mount Farmers Market!

Warren Street holds an important place in Rocky Mount’s history. Beginning in the 1890s, the street grew into a center of Black business and community life, eventually becoming home to more than 25 businesses.

The Warren Street Festival carries that history forward with a day celebrating community, culture and heritage.
