Below is a public notification regarding a barricade/hostage situation at Candlewood Apartments that ended peacefully earlier today in Rocky Mount.
The Rocky Mount Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded today to Candlewood Apartments in Rocky Mount regarding a barricade/hostage situation involving an adult male and a juvenile.
The male subject had barricaded himself inside a residence with the juvenile, who is the daughter of the subject’s roommate. Law enforcement established communication with the subject and began negotiations.
During the course of those negotiations, the juvenile was safely released from the residence and reunited with her mother.
Law enforcement negotiators continued communicating with the male subject following the juvenile’s release. After continued negotiations, the subject was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Mitchell Dehaven, 33, was arrested and charged with threats to bomb, burn, or destroy, in violation of Virginia Code § 18.2-83; felony destruction of property, in violation of Virginia Code § 18.2-137; and felony abduction.
The Rocky Mount Police Department would like to thank the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin County Public Safety for their response, assistance, and cooperation in bringing this situation to a safe and peaceful resolution.
