On October 7, 2026, at approximately 10:13 a.m., the Franklin County High School received a telephone call reporting a bomb threat incoming towards the school.
School administration immediately contacted the 911 Communications Center, and law enforcement personnel responded to the campus within minutes. School Resource Deputies already on scene worked alongside School Administrators to secure the high school campus and initiate established emergency protocols. Traffic on adjoining roadways was restricted, and additional law enforcement personnel responded to assist with securing and clearing the buildings and campus while preventing additional individuals from entering the area.
Out of an abundance of caution, other schools within the area were also placed on lockdown or hold-in-place status while law enforcement investigated the threat.
Multiple law enforcement agencies worked diligently to clear the Franklin County High School campus and investigate the circumstances surrounding the call. Following a thorough response, no explosive device or other credible threat was located, and the threat was determined to be unsubstantiated.
Law enforcement is aware that other school districts received similar threats today. Based on information currently available, investigators believe this incident may be consistent with a โswattingโ incident โ a deliberately false report intended to generate a significant emergency law enforcement response. The investigation remains ongoing, including efforts to identify the origin and source of the call.
The Franklin County Sheriffโs Office and the Franklin County Public Schools understand the fear and uncertainty an incident of this nature creates for students, staff members, parents, and families. During an active threat investigation, however, it is critical that established emergency procedures be allowed to work as intended. These procedures have been developed to protect students and staff and are carried out through close coordination between school administrators, School Resource Deputies, 911 communications personnel, and responding public safety agencies.
We also recognize that the time required to investigate and clear a threat can feel extremely long for families waiting for information. Every threat must be treated seriously until law enforcement can determine otherwise. Buildings must be secured, information must be evaluated, and areas must be systematically checked before an all-clear can safely be given.
Communication during these incidents is provided as quickly and accurately as circumstances allow. During an active law enforcement investigation, there may be information that cannot immediately be released without potentially compromising the response or investigation. School officials and law enforcement work together throughout the incident to provide verified information when it is appropriate and safe to do so.
We ask parents and community members to rely on official communications from Franklin County Public Schools and the Franklin County Sheriffโs Office during critical incidents and to avoid traveling to an affected school campus unless specifically directed to do so. Keeping roadways and school access points clear allows emergency personnel to respond without unnecessary delays.
The Franklin County Sheriffโs Office appreciates the cooperation of Franklin County Public Schools, the Rocky Mount Police Department - Virginia, the Henry County Sheriff's Office, Ferrum College Police Department and the Virginia State Police, Franklin County Fire & EMS, public safety agencies, students, staff members, parents, and the community throughout todayโs response.
The safety of our students, school employees, and community remains our highest priority. Every threat involving one of our schools will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
