In 1995, Dolly Parton began mailing books to children in her hometown to inspire a love of reading. She started this project in honor of her father, who could not read or write.

Today, this initiative continues in Edgecombe and Nash counties, where every month, 2,288 children receive a book in their mailbox. This is made possible by generous neighbors who fund the program, dedicated volunteers who help run it, and of course, the woman from Sevier County, TN, who started it all.

Thank you, Dolly. We will always love you.

A few years back, I wanted to find out more information about my granduncle Ernest Eckard, who was killed in action during World War II.

Another scam to try and get your hard earned money. Be aware. If it doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t.

These are the opening lyrics of the famous theme song for the beloved children’s program “Reading Rainbow,” hosted by actor LeVar Burton. The series, like the song, encouraged young readers to “take a look,” because whatever knowledge they sought, “it’s in a book.” “Reading Rainbow” is the essential example of a show about the importance of literacy, reading comprehension and the joy of storytelling, loved by viewers of all ages and from all backgrounds. How did it get its start? https://bit.ly/4lwSRE7

Did you grow up watching "Reading Rainbow"?

The 2026–2027 school year is here, and the Nash County Public School buses will officially be back on the road Tuesday morning!

Let’s work together to keep every student safe by remembering North Carolina’s school bus stopping laws:

🟥 Two-Lane Roads: Traffic in BOTH directions must stop.
🟥 Two-Lane with a Center Turn Lane: Traffic in BOTH directions must stop.
🟥 Four Lanes (No Median): Traffic in BOTH directions must stop.
🟨 Divided Highway (with a Median/Barrier): Only traffic following the bus must stop. Opposite traffic may proceed with caution.
🟨 Four or More Lanes (with Center Turn Lane): Only traffic following the bus must stop.

Expect an increase in traffic for the first two weeks of school. Please plan accordingly near school zones and be mindful of school zone speed limits.

Stay alert, slow down, and protect our kids!
