As an Area Support Chemical Company (ASCC) for the Virginia Army National Guard, Soldiers are tasked with providing chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high-yield explosive (CBRNE) reconnaissance, surveillance, and decontamination assets to a Brigade Combat Team (BCT) sized element. Typically an ASCC will deploy with a BCT and remain in the rear-area as a combat-support element; the r
econnaissance platoon would be attached to a light-infantry unit as a scout platoon and provide real-time battlefield surveillance and reconnaissance, whereas the biosurveillance platoon would be assigned to protected areas of key infrastructure or of significant tactical value. The decontamination platoons would be tasked with providing quick reaction force-like decontamination to vehicles and equipment "slimed" by a CBRNE agent or material. The 229th Chemical Company also proudly serves as the Mass Casualty Decontamination (MCD) element of the Virginia CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP). In an emergency, the 229th Chemical Company can deploy anywhere in the state of Virginia within eight hours and set-up a MCD Lane capable of decontaminating civilians affected by a toxic-industrial chemical or material or CBRN agent. In conjunction with the other elements, the CERFP is the premier CBRNE response team in the United States (Awarded Best CERFP 2011).
