As we mark the unofficial end of summer, Sheriff Bill Overton and the Franklin County Office of the Sheriff wish everyone a happy, relaxing and SAFE Labor Day Weekend!

Whether your plans include time on Smith Mountain Lake, a backyard cookout, a road trip, or simply enjoying one last long summer weekend with family and friends, please keep safety in mind.

🚗 Buckle up — every trip, every seat.
📵 Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.
🍺 If you drink, don’t drive. Plan for a sober ride home.
🚤 Heading to the lake? Boat sober and make sure everyone has the proper safety equipment.

The Franklin County Office of the Sheriff would like to remind residents that the following courts are closed today for the federal Labor Day holiday:

Regular court operations will resume following the holiday.

(Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, VA) - K9 Vito has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Vito’s vest was sponsored by JoAnne Nikitas of Las Vegas, NV and was embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Marlowe Mae Nikitas”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,631 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. LABOR DAY WEEKEND IS HERE, FRANKLIN COUNTY! 🚤🏍️

It’s one of the last big weekends of summer—and there’s a LOT happening across Franklin County, from time on the lake and busy roadways to the Franklin County Agricultural Fair.

Sheriff Bill Overton and the Franklin County Office of the Sheriff want everyone to enjoy the weekend, make some great memories and, most importantly, get home safely.

End the summer with good memories—not a bad decision.

🚫 Never operate a vehicle OR boat impaired. Have a sober driver and a plan before the fun begins.

💺🦺 Buckle up on the road. Wear a life jacket on the water.

🚗 Slow down in congested areas. With holiday traffic and Fair traffic, expect more vehicles on the roads and give yourself extra time.

🏍️🚲🚶 Give motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians room. Look twice and share the road.

🚤 Getting on the water? Stay alert, boat responsibly and remember that safe boating is just as important as safe driving.

🎡 Heading to the Franklin County Agricultural Fair? Watch for increased traffic and pedestrians around the fairgrounds, keep children close in crowded areas, and lock your vehicle with valuables out of sight.

The Franklin County Eagles are back under the Friday night lights TONIGHT, taking on Salem at home at 7:30 PM!

Virginia is making progress, but one bad decision can still have lasting consequences.

Preliminary January–June 2025 data shows that alcohol-related deaths were down 32% in Virginia. That’s progress worth continuing.

The Franklin County Office of the Sheriff and Sheriff Bill Overton encourage everyone to help keep that number moving in the right direction.

🎡🐄 THE FRANKLIN COUNTY FAIR OPENS TODAY! 🌽🎠

It’s Fair time! The Franklin County Agricultural Fair is officially underway September 2–5 at Franklin County Recreation Park, and Sheriff Bill Overton and the Franklin County Office of the Sheriff want everyone to have a fun—and safe—time at the Fair!

As you head out, remember that the Fair means increased traffic, more pedestrians and busier parking areas. A few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe:

🚗 EXPECT INCREASED TRAFFIC near the fairgrounds. Give yourself extra time and be patient.

🚶 SLOW DOWN & WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS, especially near entrances and parking areas.

👨‍👩‍👧 KEEP CHILDREN CLOSE in crowded areas. Consider choosing a family meeting spot in case anyone gets separated.

🔒 LOCK YOUR VEHICLE & KEEP VALUABLES OUT OF SIGHT.

⚠️ ARE YOU READY, FRANKLIN COUNTY?

September is National Preparedness Month, and Sheriff Bill Overton and the Franklin County Office of the Sheriff are encouraging every family to take a few simple steps now that can make a BIG difference when an emergency happens.

Because emergencies don’t make appointments. Severe weather, flooding, fires, tornadoes, health emergencies and power outages can happen with little or no warning.

Preparedness starts BEFORE the emergency.

✅ MAKE A PLAN — Know where your family will go, how you’ll communicate and what you’ll do if you become separated.

🎒 BUILD AN EMERGENCY KIT — Include water, nonperishable food, medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, chargers and other essentials your household may need.

📱 KNOW YOUR RISKS — Understand the types of emergencies that can affect Franklin County and have a plan for each.

📢 STAY INFORMED — Make sure you have a reliable way to receive emergency and severe weather alerts, especially when conditions can change quickly.

🤝 HELP OTHERS — Check on family members, neighbors, older adults and others who may need extra assistance during an emergency.
