🚨 Roadway Safety Reminder from Rocky Point Fire Department 🚨
Good evening everyone,
Due to several recent incidents on our roadways, Rocky Point Fire Department would like to remind our community of North Carolina traffic laws, safe driving practices, and the critical role you play in helping emergency responders do their job safely and effectively.
When an emergency happens, seconds matter. Firefighters, EMS, and law enforcement are doing everything possible to reach those in need quickly and safely. While some emergency vehicle actions may appear aggressive or unusual, all operations are conducted with due regard for public safety—a requirement under North Carolina law.
We also want to assure the community that any concerns regarding emergency vehicle operations are taken seriously. All reported incidents are reviewed internally, and when appropriate, outside agencies are involved to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
đźš’ Highly Trained Emergency Vehicle Operators
All of our drivers are, at a minimum, State of North Carolina certified Emergency Vehicle Drivers. Many also hold advanced certifications, including Class B, Class A, and Emergency Vehicle Driver Instructor qualifications. This ensures that every operator is trained to the highest standards in both safety and response.
🚗 When You See Emergency Vehicles Responding (NCGS §20-157):
When an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights and sirens:
• Two-lane roads: Traffic in both directions must pull to the right and come to a complete stop
• Multi-lane roads: Safely move to the right and yield to allow passage
• Divided highways/interstates: Opposing traffic is not required to stop if separated by a median
Drivers are required by law to yield the right-of-way and remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has safely passed.
⚠️ Move Over Law – When Crews Are Working on Scene (NCGS §20-157(f)):
When approaching an emergency or public service vehicle stopped with flashing lights:
• Move over to the next lane if it is safe to do so
• If unable to move over, slow down, maintain a safe speed, and be prepared to stop
This law applies to fire, EMS, law enforcement, tow operators, and utility crews.
🚫 Additional Important Safety Laws (NCGS §20-157):
• Do NOT follow fire apparatus to an emergency scene
• Do NOT park within 100 feet of emergency vehicles operating on scene
• Do NOT drive over fire hoses or equipment
• Do NOT block access to emergency vehicles or their water supply
Violations of these laws can result in fines, misdemeanor charges, or more serious penalties if injury or damage occurs.
This isn’t just about following the law—it’s about protecting the responders working just feet from passing traffic. These are your neighbors, friends, and family members.
By following these laws, you help us reach emergencies faster and keep responders safe on scene. One day, that someone in need could be you or someone you love.
