Started the morning with coffee at Confidence Coffee with Angelina White, running for JP District 2, and Meleah Gretzmier, running for JP District 13.

We talked campaigns, what’s working, what’s been challenging, and most importantly, what we’re hearing from people across Benton County.

Even though I’m running for office at the state level, conversations like this help me stay connected to what’s happening in our communities. Local leaders are on the ground every day, and their perspective matters when it comes to advocating at the Capitol for the grants, resources, and support our communities need.

Really enjoyed the conversation with two great candidates. There’s a lot we can accomplish when we work together.

My military career started in 2005 as a Diesel Mechanic in the Arkansas Army National Guard. Over the next 20 years, I took on new responsibilities and leadership roles, serving as a Squad Leader, Platoon Leader, Company Commander, Battalion Logistics Officer, and Support Operations Officer.

A lot of that work came down to the same things: taking care of people, keeping teams prepared, solving problems, and making sure the resources were there when they were needed. I ultimately retired as a Major and Senior Logistics Officer after 20 years of service.

My time in the Guard shaped the way I think about leadership. Prepare carefully. Communicate clearly. Take responsibility. And never forget the people counting on you.

Those are lessons I’ll carry with me to the Arkansas House.

For almost a year, voters have been coming to these meetings and asking the JPs to press Sheriff Holloway to step down to the state mandated WSO model of 287g. Instead of listening to their constituents, Sheriff Holloway, with the vocal and continuous support of our JPs, has not only ignored those pleas, but has actually signed on to the higher, most aggressive form of ICE collaboration available under 287g, the task force model.

This allows the officers under this agreement to perform ICE duties out in our communities. In addition, we learned at finance committee that they intend to apply for a roughly $35 MILLION felony jail pod grant that requires this type of ICE collaboration.

Make no mistake, this is not about creating a safer Benton County or because we have a significant increase in crime. In fact, we are consistently home to several of the safest cities in Arkansas. This is about increasing the number of people in our community who can be incarcerated, even though myself and others have repeatedly shared the data showing not only are community solutions LESS COSTLY for tax payers, but they actually REDUCE CRIME and incarceration. Ask yourself why your elected officials are so committed to continuing to spend your tax dollars inefficiently, all while harming members of your community?

I hope to see you there tomorrow!

In Arkansas we believe in Direct Democracy, we believe in the sacred right to petition our government, and we value the work of generations before us who demanded that the people rule. I believe in our constitutional rights, not more barriers.
