This East Tennessee mountain girl is so saddened by the loss of Dolly. My momma remembers her singing on the Cas Walker Show while standing on a milk crate. May she rest in peace.

Today, the mountains of East Tennessee feel a little quieter.

It’s hard to put into words what Dolly Parton has meant to this little corner of the world, because she was never simply a country music star.

She was a storyteller. A dreamer. A songwriter. A businesswoman. A philanthropist. A woman of faith. And through all the fame and rhinestones, she remained fiercely proud of the mountains that raised her.

Dolly showed the world that where you came from didn’t determine how far you could go. You could dream bigger than your circumstances, build something extraordinary without forgetting home, and then turn around and make the road a little easier for those coming behind you.

One piece of Dolly’s legacy that has always meant the most to us is her belief that children deserve access to books.

Her Imagination Library wasn’t just about putting books into little hands. It was about literacy, imagination, opportunity, and making sure a child’s circumstances didn’t determine whether they grew up surrounded by stories.

That is the reason we give children’s books away at The Unkind Raven.

We believe a child should never have to wonder if they can afford a book. If a kid walks into our shop, falls in love with a story, and doesn’t have the money to take it home, we want that book to leave with them.

Because sometimes a book is just a book.

And sometimes it’s the first glimpse a child gets of a world bigger than the one they know.

Dolly understood that.

She gave children books. She gave families hope when wildfires devastated our mountains. She created jobs and opportunities here at home. She told Appalachian stories proudly and showed the world how special the people who call these mountains home truly are.

Dolly wasn’t some faraway celebrity. She is part of the fabric of East Tennessee.

Today, we lost a Tennessee treasure.

But somewhere, I have to believe Carl was waiting for her, and Heaven just gained one heck of a songwriter.

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the stories, the laughter, the books, and for never forgetting home.

We’ll always be proud that you were one of ours and we’ll keep putting books into little hands.

“Robin, have you ever thought about opening a library?” That simple question, asked on a hot, muggy day in August, 2001, changed the trajectory of my life and the lives of the families who would someday walk through my library door. My husband, 10-year-old son, and I were attending a living book...
