The spring semester is done, and the summer is settling in here at the Sonoma State Library. But Seawolves left behind their finals notes, encouragement to classmates, and creative illustrations on whiteboards across the building for us to remember you. Today is Election Day (for the primaries) in California. With voting on everyone's mind, the Sonoma State Library is looking back to elections past through our Special Collections. From the John Schubert Russian River Collection is a photograph of poll workers counting votes during the early 20th century. And then we have a fun reminder to participate in democracy, via a 2004 postcard in our National Women's History Project Collection.

Today we mourn the loss of jazz great Sonny Rollins by featuring one of his landmark, and rarer, albums. 'Freedom Suite,' his 1958 recording for saxophone, bass, and drums trio (with Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach providing bass and drums, respectively), originally included in the sleeve notes a poignant paragraph about the inhumane and hypocritical treatment of Black Americans. Riverside, the record label, quickly reissued the LP under a different title without the controversial paragraph. The Sonoma State Library is lucky to own the original, uncensored 'Freedom Suite' in our LP collection.
