Mary Hatchett served her country. When it was time for the next chapter, she knew she wanted to stay connected to public safety β€” she just needed the right support to get there.

Through the Columbia Job Center and the Jobs for Veterans State Grant program, Mary worked with a DVOP specialist to build a plan, sharpen her resume, and start showing up β€” job fairs, hiring events, Walk-In Wednesdays. When the Missouri Department of Corrections held a hiring event at the Job Center in December, she was ready.

In January 2026, Mary started her new role as a Correctional Officer in Boonville. Her military background, criminal justice degree, and persistence all pointed to this moment.

Hiring decisions shape more than job descriptions. They shape culture, retention, and long-term success.

When reviewing candidates, it can feel like a crossroads. Do you prioritize experience and credentials? Or mindset and adaptability?

In Episode 80 of The Workforce Link Podcast, we explore why hiring for attitude vs. experience is not an either-or decision. Technical skills matter. So do communication, coachability, and culture alignment.

Strong teams are built when both are considered intentionally.

If you are refining your hiring process or planning for growth this year, this conversation offers practical questions you can apply right away.
