Message from Chief Roberts: "Today is the start of my 10th year at Missouri S&T University Police Department, after serving in various levels of municipal and federal law enforcement roles for over 30 years prior to joining the university. I am proud to work on a department that sincerely cares about the campus community it serves. I am also grateful to be a part of a campus community where the leadership value and appreciate the importance of security and safety. Thank you for the opportunity to serve." When Corporal Gary Daniels graduated from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy in 2015, he had established the first bond in a trooper’s career: He would forever be a member of the 101st Recruit Class. Decades later, troopers can name everyone in their recruit class. Recruits make it through the rigorous six-month bootcamp-style academy because they learn they are part of a team. A team in which they can rely on one another when their lives are on the line. Over the next decade, Gary established other immutable bonds within the Patrol – first in Troop C; then Troop A, where he could be closer to his family in Kansas; then part of the Patrol’s recruiting division; and, most recently, at the Patrol’s academy, where he could help shape the careers of young recruits.
Each current Patrol member and the larger Patrol family ache over the tragic loss of Corporal Gary Daniels. Missouri Department of Public Safety Director Mark James, a member of Patrol’s 48th Recruit Class, said, “Our troopers are hurting because Gary Daniels was a valued member of the Patrol family with a stellar career. He recruited and encouraged young men and women that they could succeed in our organization and, then in the academy, he helped shape the future of the Patrol. The Patrol and the entire DPS family mourn this terrible loss. Our thoughts are with Gary’s family and all who loved him.”
We will remember Gary Daniels for his selfless service to the public and for upholding the values of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He will forever be part of the Patrol team.

Chief Roberts has worked and trained and been friends with Athlete Zach Leeker for over twelve years and Zach again participated in the run.

Thank you to all the members of the campus community who have supported the Missouri Special Olympics through the purchase of Torch Run shirts.

Amy Smith (International Partners Department) and UPD Chief Doug Roberts are the advisors for the ISC - International Students Club at Missouri S&T. They, along with Jodi Hasecamp, the Director of International Student Advising, trecked to St. Louis on Sunday to take around 30 students to see the St. Louis Cardinals play the Kansas City Royals. For most of these students it was their first ever professional baseball game or visit to a professional sports team stadium. Chief Roberts, a die-hard Royals fan was happy with the Kansas City win and is pictured with some of the students who attended.

This year, the week of May 10th through May May 16th is recognized as National Police Week. National Police Week occurs each year during the week in which May 15 falls, a date designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 through Public Law 87-726. The week-long observance recognizes both fallen officers and those currently serving, highlighting their dedication to public safety and the challenges they face daily. The University Police are proud to serve the S&T campus community.

Thank you to all those law enforcement professionals who serve or who have served.
