REGIONAL MUTUAL AID — WILLIAMSBURG, INDIANA

Over the past two days, Orange Township Fire, Cromwell Fire, and Johnson Township Fire assisted the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department with incident management and flooding operations within their community.

Our departments provided two waves of mutual aid support from Thursday through Saturday morning, including command staff, personnel, portable pumps, and miscellaneous equipment to support the ongoing operation.

Since Monday, an estimated 4.3 million gallons of water have been moved as crews worked to manage flooding throughout the affected neighborhood.

For days, members of the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department worked tirelessly to keep floodwater from entering the occupied living areas of homes. Their personnel committed countless hours to protecting their neighbors and their community as conditions continued to challenge available resources.

Our role was to support an operation already well underway by providing additional incident management, personnel, equipment, and relief as the response continued. So that Williamsburg Fire could rest.

Extended incidents require departments to work together, share resources, and give exhausted crews an opportunity to rotate and recover while operations continue.

We appreciate the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Williamsburg community for allowing our departments to work alongside them during this incident.

Two days. Three assisting departments. One community that refused to quit. We can’t even begin to name all the organizations that assisted.

Orange Township Fire Department has been awarded the opportunity to obtain a Stryker Xpedition powered stair chair!

Historically, our crews have used the stair chairs provided by Parkview EMS, and we will continue to do so. This powered chair gives our firefighters an additional option when moving patients on stairways—especially when manual lifting could place greater strain on the crew.

According to CDC/NIOSH data, approximately 21,200 EMS clinicians were treated in emergency departments for work-related injuries in a single year. About 5,800 involved overexertion or bodily reaction—and roughly 40% of those were specifically connected to lifting.

The Stryker Xpedition will continue allowing us to move patients safely and efficiently while reducing the risk of back and lifting injuries to our personnel.

Simply put—it means safer patient movement and longer-lasting backs for our firefighters.

Here’s what our crew had to say:

Stephanie Rurka: “It made moving a patient down the stairs so much easier on our bodies.”

Chris Lord: “Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

🔥 SCHEDULED QUARTERLY TRAINING | LADDERS & ARRIVAL OPERATIONS

Orange Township Fire participated in its quarterly training this weekend, focusing on ladders and operations upon arrival.

Engine 61, Engine 63, and Quint 62 arrived on scene at Pepperoni's Pizza, where crews worked through initial-arrival assignments, deployed hose lines, positioned apparatus, and set up the aerial.

Training in an actual commercial building gives our firefighters the opportunity to work through apparatus placement, ladder operations, hose deployment, and crew assignments in a realistic environment before the real call comes in.

A big thank you to Debbie for allowing Orange Township Fire to utilize the building for training. Having local businesses open their doors to us provides valuable opportunities that directly benefit our firefighters and the community we serve.

MUTUAL AID — KENDALLVILLE

This morning, Quint 62 responded to Kendallville to cover Station 1 while their crews operated at a residential structure fire.

Shortly after arriving—and barely getting comfortable on the couches—Orange Township was requested to the scene. ( we think it was planned ) 😉

Quint 62 responded and assisted crews with overhaul and locating fire extension before clearing the scene.

Orange Township remained in service while part time came in for their regularly scheduled shift.

Quint 62 returned to Rome City at approximately 8:00 AM.

🚒 APPARATUS SPOTLIGHT — ENGINE 63 🚒

Nope, it’s not a Mack……….

It’s a Kenworth / Seagrave 😮

And when you hear 3,000 gallons of water coming down the road, you might still say “WOW.”

Engine 63 is our 2009 Kenworth pumper/tanker, carrying 3,000 gallons of water and equipped with a 1,500 GPM pump—a combination built to move some serious water.

💧 WHAT’S ON BOARD?
• 3,000-gallon water tank
• 1,500 GPM pump
• Portable drop tank
• Hard suction for drafting
• TurboDraft for additional drafting options
• SCBA air packs and spare bottles
• Miscellaneous hand tools
• Water-supply equipment

Engine 63 has a little history behind it, too.

When it was originally purchased, there was just one small problem:

It was too big for the old firehouse on Martin Street.

So until the new fire station was completed, Engine 63 spent some time being stored at Noble County Disposal. Once the new firehouse was ready, Engine63 finally got a home that fit.

Today, Engine 63 has a major purpose within our fleet: bring the water.

It is found making an initial response on fires, establish water supply, participate in tanker shuttles, draft from static water sources, and provide water to Engine 61, Quint 62, Grass 64, and Grass 65. It compliments our fleet well.

You may have seen us at the school , Grant Park, Sylvan Manor, and Lickity Splitz Ice Cream & Coffee LLC

Orange Township Fire Department spent the evening working on Landing Zone size-up, locating safe LZs, determining the best approach, and communicating that information with Samaritan.

Crews were given different locations and had to figure it out from there — locate it, size it up, lay it out, and communicate it.

Now, as we all know…

Not everything you see on Facebook is true. The training was real. The firefighters were real. The landing zones were real. The communication was real.

The helicopter?

Yeah… we didn’t have one of those. 😂🚁

Great evening of practical training and another opportunity to get better before the real thing shows up.
