Where Are They Now??
A nod to our past student-volunteers of the ECO Center.

A Rome native, our very own Sophia Swann volunteered with us from 2020-2024 both at the high school and collegiate levels. "I began volunteering through KRFB in the summer of 2020 while I was a student at Model High School. Then, when I got to Berry, I was granted the Ted Touchstone endorsement, which allowed me to intern with KRFB and the Eco Center as a work study program." She majored in environmental science and secondary education and graduated from Berry in December 2024 then had an amazing internship opportunity! "In the spring of 2025, I completed an animal care internship at the Chattanooga Zoo. I worked in the Asia and Hoofstock sections, which included red pandas, snow leopards, white-cheeked gibbons, giraffe, and warthogs! I was able to participate in daily husbandry, conduct keeper chats, and complete an enrichment project for the gibbons."

Sophia now lives in Ludowici, GA and teaches high school environmental science and physical science and is proud to share her passion of conservation with the next generations. If you have ever met Sophia, you know that her beautiful smile and sweet, gentle spirit immediately stand out! We know that these qualities and so many more are what make her a wonderful teacher that her students love.

Next up for Sophia...she's getting married to her high school sweetheart in June!! Congrats Sophia, on so many levels!!

Where Are They Now??
A nod to our past student-volunteers of the ECO Center.

Meet Devin Saunders, one of our earliest student volunteers who brought so much character, joy, and excellence to the ECO Center. He JUST graduated from UGA College of Veterinary Medicine, so now we can call him DR. Devin Saunders! He spent time at the ECO Center as part of the Berry College Bonner Scholars program from 2018-2022. At Berry, he majored in animal science with a minor in chemistry, and now he has earned the title of DVM from UGA. Can we say superstar?!

Devin is enjoying a brief, but much deserved, vacation right now and soon starts a yearlong rotating internship in small animal medicine, emergency, and surgery at an animal hospital in Washington DC. He has a goal of specializing via different residencies to one day become a veterinary neurologist. We cannot say enough wonderful things about Devin and all that he has and is yet to accomplish. We know there are some lucky animals and owners out there that will get to have him as their vet!
