Great program by the Exchange Club of Columbus!

Our program was at Covenant Woods Retirement Home where we were privileged to hear CSM (retired) Lester Kapelka.

We were warmly greeted by Nona and enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Chef Lucy Greene.

Our program was celebrating America’s 250th birthday and what better way than to meet an amazing Army Veteran, retired Command Sergeant Major Lester Kapelka. At 97 years young, he captivated us with his history of service which started when he joined the Merchant Marines at 16 years old.

He was drafted into the Army at 21 and served until retirement. He initially volunteered for airborne training because it gave him an extra $50 a month. He served in multiple locations all over the world, but serving in airborne positions was his passion. While on active duty he had 486 jumps. He has jumped tandem the last four years for a grand total of 490 - his last jump at the age of 97! We loved meeting him and hearing his stories.

We salute you Les and thank you for your many years of service.

Today we join the country in mourning Dolly Parton, who passed away at 80.

The world knew her voice. But what we admired most was her heart. She grew up one of twelve children in a one-bedroom home in the Smoky Mountains, and she never stopped giving back to the people and places that raised her. Her Imagination Library has put millions of books into the hands of children who might never have owned one.

That's what legacy looks like: talent shared, blessings multiplied, and a lifetime spent lifting others up.

Rest well, Dolly. Thank you for showing us all how it's done.

This exciting event brings the community together for a fun day of bowling while supporting a cause that is at the heart of Exchange Club’s mission — preventing child abuse and making a difference in the lives of children and families.
