Garden Lakes Elementary School At Garden Lakes Elementary we believe that our purpose is to provide an educational foundation that challenges each student to maximize his or her potential.

The school community will provide a safe learning environment in which children can grow to be responsible members of society. We are “Excellence In Action” by working hard to not only meet the standards, but to exceed them! 🍎 TEACHER OF THE YEAR: MRS. HOYT WALTERS! 📚✨

For this week’s dive into the GLES archives, we’re spotlighting a true pioneer from our early days: Mrs. Hoyt Walters, who was named Garden Lakes School’s Teacher of the Year!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ARCHIVES:

🍎 Founding Faculty: Mrs. Walters was a 4th-grade teacher who joined Garden Lakes School right when it was created in 1955!

🎓 Local Roots: A Floyd County native and 1935 Shorter College graduate, she taught at Model and Coosa before helping lay the foundation for GLES.

🌟 Community Leader: Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Walters was a music teacher, Cub Scout den mother, Celanese P.-T.A. leader, and lived right on Garden Lakes Boulevard with her family.

Dedicated educators like Mrs. Walters helped set the standard of excellence that still defines Garden Lakes Elementary today! 🦅💙

🍩 DONUT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER! 📚☕

Our 3rd graders kicked off their very first room transformation of the year, and it was an absolute hit! 🤩

Students stepped into a cozy cafe setup to explore different literary genres, listen to incredible guest readers, and—of course—enjoy some doughnuts and "coffee" while they read! 🍩 Warm drinks, sweet treats, and great books made for an unforgettable learning day.

Reading has never looked more exciting for these Eagles! 🦅💙

We recently uncovered a treasure trove of historic scrapbooks and documents tucked away at Garden Lakes Elementary, packed with decades of memories, newspaper clippings, and photos! Today, we’re kicking off a special Throwback Thursday series to share the rich history of our school with our GLES family.

For our very first dive into the archives, we're taking a step back 70 years to 1956!

LOOKING BACK AT 1956:
🏢 The Building: Check out this incredible photo of the original school building fresh off its construction. Notice the classic mid-century architecture and the wide-open landscape surrounding the campus!

📰 The First Open House: This featured newspaper clipping highlights the excitement of the very first Open House night, where local families gathered to tour the brand-new classrooms and welcome the very first generation of Garden Lakes students.

From day one, Garden Lakes Elementary was built on community, family support, and a commitment to helping young minds soar. While our building and tech have updated over the decades, that same Eagle Pride has been going strong since 1956!
