Today, we recognize Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reminder that freedom was not handed down by accident. It was secured through sacrifice, preserved through courage, and written into law through the work of the Republican Party.

It was the Republican Party that was founded in opposition to the expansion of slavery. It was the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, who issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It was Republicans who led the fight to pass the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, abolishing slavery, securing citizenship, and protecting the right to vote.

That history matters.

Republicans also fought for years to see Juneteenth properly recognized as a federal holiday, and during his first term, President Trump helped bring renewed national attention to the importance of Juneteenth in American life and history.

Juneteenth belongs to every American who believes that liberty is our birthright, that human dignity comes from God, and that the promise of America must be defended in every generation.

Today, we honor freedom. We remember the cost. And we remain committed to the principles that made emancipation possible.
