Commission Approves Legal Action on PFAS Pollution and Honors Investigator Jamie White

The Floyd County Commission approved Arnold & Itkin LLP as lead counsel to represent Floyd County in pursuing claims against persons and entities responsible for polluting county landfills, and other affected properties, including drinking water wells and parks, with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS.

PFAS are often referred to as forever chemicals because they do not break down easily in the environment and can create long-term challenges for local governments responsible for protecting public health, drinking water resources, parks, landfills, and other public infrastructure.

PFAS contamination can place significant financial and operational burdens on taxpayers by requiring monitoring, testing, treatment, remediation and other protective measures to safeguard residents and public property. The pollution has caused, and continues to cause, real financial and health damages to the citizens of Floyd County.

Commissioners also recognized Floyd County District Attorney Investigator Jamie White for his efforts to save a childโ€™s life.

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, while camping at the Rocky Mountain Project, Investigator White heard frantic cries for help and saw a child, approximately 10 years old, in distress and drowning in the lake.

โ€œWe appreciate Investigator Whiteโ€™s heroic efforts while off duty and are glad he was in a place he was needed at a time when he was desperately needed,โ€ Floyd County Commission Chair Rhonda Wallace said.

Without hesitation, Investigator White dove into the lake, rescued the child, and brought him safely back to shore. His courage, dedication, and quick actions reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of law enforcement service.

During Tuesdayโ€™s meeting, commissioners also approved using SPLOST funds as a local match for a state grant to pave a portion of Turner Road NE with a rubberized asphalt compound. Commissioners also approved replacing a chiller at the Sara Hightower Regional Library.

Yesterday, we celebrated our men and women in Public Works at their annual picnic celebration, and also ending Public Works Week. The American Public Works Association's theme for this year was โ€œRooted in Service, Powered by Communityโ€, which acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in public works. Itโ€™s what has propelled public works innovations that have helped our communities evolve into places where people can lead lives of purpose and possibility. These efforts form the foundation of thriving communities, reminding us that every project, seen or unseen, powers the connection between service and the people it supports.

Current and retired employees, vendors, and friends ended their week celebrating at the annual PW Picnic. Employees were recognized, door prizes won, and let's not forget the food and fellowship. Join us in celebrating our hard working men and women of Floyd County Public Works!
