Heads up: Veterans Woods will be closing early on Friday, July 3.

Due to the regional fireworks displays being scheduled and a concern that the public will want to gather in the preserves after they are closed at sunset, the Forest Preserve will be closing a few sites early to prevent people from congregating in large groups.

In today's edition of "Fungus Among Us," check out this Mossy Maze Polypore we found at Veterans Woods. It's usually white to grayish brown, with an upper surface that's covered in fine hairs and the arrangement of the pores resembles a maze of slots. It's found on logs and dead hardwood trees. We're performing parking lot maintenance on May 12 at Veterans Woods. The preserve will remain open, but sections of the parking lot may be temporarily blocked.
