Greenbrier County Health Department is investigating 2 confirmed cases of Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Pertussis is spread by face-to face contact with a person who has the disease. Pertussis starts with common cold symptoms. It then develops into cough followed by a high pitched “whoop” sound and vomiting after coughing. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please consult your doctor. The best protection against Pertussis is to ensure your Tetanus vaccine is up to date. Please contact the Greenbrier County Health Department with any questions or concerns.

The Greenbrier County Health Department will proctor the ServSafe Certified Food Safety Manager TEST on Tuesday, August 4th at 10:00am. This will be the TEST ONLY. Classroom learning will need to be completed by the student prior to the test. To register, call 304-645-1539. The fee is $75. EVERY food establishment is REQUIRED to have at least one certified food safety manager.

Don't let summer storms take you by surprise!
Summer weather can change in an instant. From heavy downpours and flash flooding to damaging winds and lightning, being prepared is the best way to keep your family safe.
1) Stay informed:
Know how to receive alerts before the power goes out
Monitor trusted sources like the National Weather Service, local news, or a battery- operated NOAA Weather Radio.
Understand the difference: a Watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather; a Warning means severe weather is occurring or imminent- take shelter immediately.

2) Build an Emergency Kit
Food and Water ( 1 gallon a day per person, non-perishable food)
Power (flashlights, batteries, portable phone chargers, gas)
First Aid ( basic medical supplies and necessary prescriptions)
Essentials ( important documents ( in water proof container), pet supplies,etc

3) Make a family plan:
Identify a safe place room or place
Practice: conduct a drill so everyone knows where to go
Turn around, Don't Drown: Never walk or drive through flooded roadways.

A racoon has tested positive for rabies in the Crawley area.

Rabies is 100% preventable if you know the steps to protect your family and your pets. Whether you’re out on the trail or in your own backyard, here is how to stay safe:

3 Key Steps to Prevention
Vaccinate Your Pets: Keep your dogs, cats, and ferrets up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Talk with your vet about your livestock as well. It’s their best line of defense (and often the law!).

Give Wildlife Space: Never touch, feed, or approach wild animals—especially bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes. If you see an animal acting strangely, report it to local animal control.

Secure Your Home: Keep trash cans tightly sealed, feed pets indoors, and cap chimneys or repair holes to prevent wild animals from nesting in your home or barn.

What to Do If Bitten or Scratched
Wash immediately: Scrub the wound thoroughly with plenty of soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
See a doctor: Head to an emergency room or healthcare provider right away. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is highly effective when given promptly.
Report it: Notify local health or animal control departments about the incident.

The Greenbrier County Health Department will close at 12:30pm on Thursday, July 2, 2026, and will be closed all day on Friday, July 3, 2026, for the Independence Day holiday. We will resume normal business hours on Monday, July 6, 2026.
