The Spongy Moth Department is in the process of putting together their survey crew. You can apply online at Roscommoncounty.net/218/spongy-moth-program, at MI Works or pick up an application at the office. See the attached letter for more information.

FYI if you are seeing these in your trees they are Eastern Tent Caterpillars, they are in no way related to the invasive Spongy Moth. Tent Caterpillars primarily target fruit trees (especially Cherry) and while unsightly and occasionally, mildly destructive to the infested tree, they are generally considered harmless.
If they are causing an issue you can simply remove the branches with clean sharp pruners and dispose of them by soaking them in a bucket of soapy water. Burning and or pesticides are discouraged.

FUN FACT: 1 chickadee will eat 6,000-9,000 caterpillars
