Local Scam Funds Recovered

Gerrish Township Police Officers recently handled a scam from someone posing as "Publishers Clearing House." The caller advised the victim that they had won over 10 million dollars and a new truck. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the victim did send a check out for close to $10,000. Some quick work by officers led to the recovery of those funds that were ultimately returned to the victim.
Gerrish Township Police would like to remind everyone that if you receive such a call to be vigilant against scammers. Be aware of high-pressure demands to act immediately, requests for unusual payments such as gift cards and cryptocurrency. Best practice is not to give out any banking or personal information to anyone until you have verified who you are talking to; double check the number they are calling from.
Remember, these scammers can be very good at convincing people to send out money. If you ever receive a call about winning a lottery, your account is compromised, or someone posing as the IRS or Police, please take a moment and verify who is calling you. If the person tells you not to tell anyone, that is a red flag. You can always contact the Gerrish Township Police Department or your local agency, as these scams can usually be detected fairly quickly.
You should file a police report if you have become the victim of a fraud only if you have lost money. You can report any fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov.
