🚒❤️ Fire Prevention Fun! ❤️🚒

Over the last two weeks, our firefighters and EMS crews have had the opportunity to visit local schools and talk with students about fire safety, emergency response, and what to do when they need help.

While we love teaching important safety lessons, we must admit... some of the BEST parts of these visits are the questions and comments we get from the kids! 😄

Some of this year's favorites include:

🕒 "Why is the clock wrong?" (It wasn't wrong... it was military time!)

🚑 "Can you show me the secret door?" (We checked... the ambulance still doesn't have one.)

❤️ While showing the heart monitor: "Does it kill germs?"

🥾 "Do you want to feel the inside of my boots?"

🚓 When asked if they'd ever ridden in an ambulance before: "No... but my dad's been in a cop car."

These visits always remind us how curious, honest, and hilarious kids can be. Thank you to all of the schools, teachers, and students who welcomed us into your classrooms. We hope the children learned a little about staying safe, and we know our crews left with plenty of smiles and stories to share! A big thank you to Higgins Twp Fire/EMS for helping out!

🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tip: If a battery or device becomes swollen, overheats, smells strange, or starts smoking, stop using it immediately and move away from it if it is safe to do so. Never charge batteries under a pillow, on a bed, or unattended overnight.

Fire is fast. Normally, you may have three minutes or less to escape a home fire. However, If a larger device such as an e-scooter is involved, once it ignites, it can fill a room with smoke in seconds, limiting your time to escape to one minute or less.

Planning ahead saves lives. Create and practice an escape plan with your loved ones to prepare in the case of a fire. Have a Plan A to use your primary exit and a Plan B with an alternate exit as a back up. If you’re unable to escape, don’t forget Plan C — get behind a closed door and call 9-1-1. Two days of learning, networking, and getting better!

Over the last two days, Gerrish Township Fire & EMS was proud to host an incredible 12-Lead ECG and STEMI workshop taught by Tim Phalen. We welcomed EMTs and Paramedics from agencies across the county who joined us for of continuing education and discussion.

One of the things we love most about emergency services is that no matter how long you've been doing the job, there's always something new to learn. Medicine is constantly evolving, and we owe it to our patients and community to keep growing right along with it.
This class focused on recognizing STEMIs and NSTEMIs, identifying common STEMI imposters, and understanding what these conditions look like on a 12-lead ECG and, just as importantly, why they look that way. The discussions challenged providers to think beyond simply reading a monitor and to better understand the story the heart is telling.

A huge thank you to Stryker for sponsoring this educational opportunity and to The Butcher's Wife for providing lunch for everyone both days. We also want to thank all of the agencies and providers who took time out of their busy schedules to join us.

ROAD CLOSURE

***UPDATE*** - CLOSED THROUGH FRIDAY (due to the weather), 10/2 (end of day)

Starting Monday, 9/28, at 8:00am, weather permitting, through Wednesday, 9/30, North Cut Road between West Pinewood Drive and Sunset Drive will be closed to replace a cross culvert and four catch basins. The detour route will be East Higgins Lake Drive to West Sunset Drive. Access will be allowed for residents and/or those that need access to the Roscommon Youth Football/Soccer Fields. Please use caution in this area. Thank you.
