TRAIN DERAILMENT NORTH OF WARROAD

WHAT HAPPENED?
At approximately 0450 on March 28, 2026, Canadian Railway train derailed north of Warroad. First responders, (CN) Canadian National Railway official and mutual aid partners are on-scene and currently working in clean-up activities, which could take two to three days. There are no environmental concerns at this time.

CURRENT SITUATION

• Status: Under control with no current threat to the public.
• Impact: 42 derailed railcars, 2 are classified as “dangerous goods cars”.
• Actions Taken:
• Precautionary evacuation was completed, with The Patch Motel in Warroad open for sheltering.
• Road closures have occurred, with the current evacuation zone running from 400th street to County road 137 along Highway 313.
• State hazardous materials teams from International Falls and Grand Rapids are currently on scene for air monitoring and to check for leakage on derailed railcars. National weather service is also assisting with air monitoring activities.
• Heavy equipment is staged to upright the derailed railcars.
• CN is on scene with resources to assist in any containment needs.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO (PUBLIC GUIDANCE)

• Action 1: Stay away from the evacuated area
• Action 2: Individuals that live in the evacuation zone should shelter at the Patch Motel in Warroad.

***Update for the train derailment north of Warroad***

The current evacuation zone runs from 400th Street to County road 137 along HWY 313.

The Patch Motel is open for people that need to evacuate. This is just a precaution.

We will update the public when we have further information.

The Sheriff's Office has had several vehicles in the ditch due to icy roads and strong enough winds to force vehicles and high profile units off the road.
With the blowing snow sticking to the roads causing these icy conditions we ask that drivers take extra precautions while traveling.
