It’s National Heat Awareness Day!

Heat-related illness can happen inside or outside in as little as 10 to 15 minutes.

It’s important to know the difference between heat exhaustion, which is treatable by finding a cooler location and drinking water, and heat stroke, which requires emergency medical attention.

As Wildfire Awareness Month comes to a close, our work — and your role in prevention — continues. We are now transitioning from awareness to action as fire season officially begins in the Douglas District.

Fire season serves as an important reminder that wildfire prevention starts with all of us. One small spark can have devastating consequences, but one responsible decision can help protect lives, forests, homes, and communities.

As conditions become warmer and drier, we encourage everyone to stay informed, follow fire season regulations, and take extra precautions while working or recreating outdoors.

✔️ Secure trailer chains
✔️ Avoid parking in dry grass
✔️ Use equipment responsibly
✔️ Follow current restrictions
✔️ Fully extinguish campfires until cold to the touch

At DFPA, our mission remains clear: Providing the highest level of service to safeguard life, resources, and property from wildland fire through practical prevention & aggressive fire suppression since 1912.

Together with our partners, including Keep Oregon Green, we can help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect what makes Douglas County home.

One small spark can change everything. Prevention starts with all of us.

Help mitigate your wildfire risk by creating a defensible space of at least 30 feet around your home free of flammable vegetation and materials as a wildfire buffer.

Did you know? More than 53 drone incursions occurred near wildfires nationwide in 2025 alone. Unauthorized drones create serious risks for first responders and can force firefighting aircraft to stop operations.

Capturing wildfire footage may be tempting, but flying a drone near a wildfire puts firefighters and aviation crews at risk of a catastrophic collision.

As wildfire activity increases, help protect our firefighters, aircraft, and public lands by keeping drones away from wildfires.

Lookingglass Rural Fire District is sharing the following information from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA):

FIRE SEASON OFFICIALLY BEGINS MAY 30, 2026

DFPA has announced that fire season for Douglas County will officially begin Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 12:01 AM. Public Use Restrictions will also go into effect at that time on all private, county, state, and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands within the Douglas District.

The initial restriction level will be set to LOW.

As temperatures rise and fuels continue to dry out, it is critical that everyone does their part to help prevent human-caused wildfires.

Key restrictions include:
• No backyard debris burning or burn barrels
• No fireworks, exploding targets, or tracer ammunition
• Campfires are only allowed at designated locations
• Smoking prohibited while traveling except in vehicles on improved roads or designated areas
• Vehicles are restricted to improved roads free of flammable vegetation
• Certain equipment use, mowing, welding, and power saw operations may become time restricted as fire danger increases

Residents and visitors are encouraged to remain aware of current fire danger levels and restrictions before conducting outdoor activities.

Unstable conditions may allow for thunderstorms to develop across parts of northern California and southern Oregon. These storms are possible in the afternoon and evening of Wednesday and Thursday. Strong winds aloft could bring fast-moving storms that may develop especially gusty winds. These storms may also bring lightning as well as locally moderate to heavy rainfall. Be aware of your surroundings, especially if traveling or participating in outdoor activities!
