Watercolor Wednesday!

The Grinch with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling. How could is be so? It came with out ribbon. It came with out tags. It came with out packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore. Then the grinch thought of something he hadn't before!

We are excited to once again be teaming up with Lithia Ford Lincoln of Roseburg and @compareford in their Ford Focus on Child Hunger Campaign during the 2020 holiday season. Last year the Ford partnership with 66 clubs across 5 states served 52,566 youth over 475,000 meals & snacks. Thank you Ford for helping us in the fight to end child hunger and making a difference in the lives of our youth and communities.

OREGON Youth and Government
A National YMCA Program
A fun and exciting way to learn about democracy and to address issues in our community, our state, and learn how the legislative process works.
The Oregon YMCA Youth & Government Program enhances development of the American democratic process for young people through participatory training in the theory and practice of the Oregon state government.
10th, 11th, and 12th graders in the program learn about the legislative process, how to write and research bills, and how to participate in elections. Their work culminates in teens serving as delegates at a state conference, debating bills on the floor of the legislature. Some teens have actually made bills into laws! While this year's program will be held virtually, the experience will mirror that of the actual state legislative process.
The Youth and Government program seeks to build, encourage and strengthen life assets and character traits that will help teens become involved and responsible adults. All activities are designed with the following goals in mind:
• To provide training and experience in understanding the legislative process
• To develop critical thinking and analytical abilities
• To provide active participation in the legislative process
• To develop interpersonal communication skills
• To provide awareness of social issues and their possible solutions
• To provide opportunities to hear and respect varying viewpoints
• To encourage active participation in political and public affairs

Thanks to a generous grant from the Oregon Health Authority, funds are available to cover most of the costs of participation as well as chromebooks for teens in the program who may not have access.
We have a virtual delegation and advisor that meets with youth from around the state once a week to facilitate the program, and all materials are provided online. While we began in November, it is not too late to join in on this outstanding program now.
More details can be found online at https://www.oregonymcas.org/youth-government or by emailing the State Director at [email protected].

The meeting will take place online via Zoom, December 1 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Remote access instructions will be provided upon registration.

Participants will learn the steps needed to become a K-12 teacher.

“Despite the pandemic, we want to remind people that teaching remains a viable and needed career. We have an exciting evening planned that includes college representatives from three universities and one community college who are passionate about the teaching profession. Our intention is to equip attendees with an actionable plan,” says Holly Hill, Douglas Education Service District Human Resources Director.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to meet with college representatives from George Fox University, Grand Canyon University, Western Oregon University and Umpqua Community College.
