It is once again “Throwback Thursday” and we are taking you back to 1994. It was 32 years ago that the City of Roseburg purchased this 1994, 75 ft. aerial ladder truck.

This truck faithfully served the community through thousands of emergency responses, training evolutions, public education events, and special operations.

This ladder truck was placed into reserve status in 2009, when our current ladder truck was purchased and then eventually was taken out of service after twenty plus years of serving our community.

The cost of fire apparatus has changed significantly. Ladder trucks represent a major investment for communities. A new aerial ladder truck in 2026 can cost between 1.9 and 2.5 million dollars, depending on specifications, equipment and aerial capabilities.

The pictures below show the 1994 truck in use at a burn to learn training exercise in 2001.

Last night, we had the privilege of celebrating a significant milestone for Firefighter JD Fairbairn and Firefighter Aubrey Syverson as they officially graduated from their probationary year.

Family members of each firefighter, along with members of the Roseburg Fire Department, gathered at the Roseburg Public Safety Center to congratulate them on a job well done.

Chief Christopherson spoke to those in attendance, acknowledging, praising, and thanking Firefighters Fairbairn and Firefighter Syverson for their dedication, hard work, and steadfast commitment to their career as a firefighter and to serving our community.

In addition, Admin Battalion Chief Chris Galligan spoke highly of both firefighters, noting that over the past year, both firefighters have completed approximately 500 hours of rigorous training, demonstrating their drive to learn, ability to acquire new skill sets, and a strong dedication to the fire service. Their training included hands-on experience in critical skills such as vehicle extrication, ladder operations, forcible entry techniques, search and rescue, vertical ventilation, and more. Congratulations were in order, as both firefighters successfully passed all physical skills testing and required written tests.

Firefighter Fairbairn and Firefighter Syverson also had the rare opportunity to participate in a live burn training exercise, putting their skills to the test in a controlled but highly realistic environment that reinforces teamwork, acclimating to the fire environment, and learning fire behavior.

A meaningful part of the evening was the pinning ceremony, where each firefighter was joined by a family member, who proudly pinned their new firefighter badge on them. This moment symbolized not only the completion of their probationary year and academy training, but also the unwavering support system behind each of them throughout this journey.

Congratulations to Firefighter Fairbairn and Firefighter Syverson for successfully completing their probationary year. Join us, as we wish them continued success in this next chapter of their fire service career.

As we head into Memorial Day Weekend and kick off outdoor adventures, it is also an important reminder that May is Wildfire Awareness Month.

Whether you are camping, hiking, riding, or simply enjoying the outdoors, a few simple precautions can make a big difference in protecting our forests, parks, and communities.

Wildfire Safety Tips for Memorial Day Weekend Camping:

• Check current fire restrictions and weather conditions before heading out
• Never leave a campfire unattended, even for a minute
• Keep water, dirt, or a shovel nearby to fully extinguish your fire
• Drown campfires until they are completely out
• Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can spark fires
• Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials

The Roseburg Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend. Together, we can help prevent wildfires and protect the places we all love to enjoy.

Yesterday, members of the Roseburg Fire Department had the honor of attending the Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony at the Douglas County Courthouse to stand alongside our local law enforcement partners and community in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is a time to honor and reflect on the courage, dedication, and selfless service of the brave officers who gave their lives protecting others. We are forever grateful for their sacrifice and remain committed to remembering those no longer with us. Their legacy and service will never be forgotten.

Roseburg firefighters are continuing to flush fire hydrants inside the city limits of Roseburg through June 30, 2026. Hydrant flushing will be conducted Monday through Friday each week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Fire Department realizes that hydrant flushing may cause some inconvenience; however, the flushing program is necessary to ensure the proper functioning and delivery of adequate water from the water mains when needed for fire control.

During the flushing process, customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water. While the water is safe to drink, customers may prefer to wait until it runs clear before drinking or washing clothes and dishes.

The community’s cooperation with this hydrant-flushing program is appreciated.
