The United Community Action Network (UCAN) Youth Enrichment Support (YES) is a program that was created in July of 2012 to provide support to our youth, specifically through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The UCAN YES program assists in spreading awareness of the SFSP, developing and strengthening the SFSP food sites, and creating a self sustaining SFSP in Douglas County with the help of volunteers and community champions.

General information

What Is The Summer Food Program? The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is one of the USDA’s child nutrition programs. The SFSP provides funding for healthy meals at approved Summer Food Program sites. Unlike other USDA child nutrition programs, SFSP meals are free for all youth ages 1- 18 years old. All Children are welcome, regardless of income, residency, or school enrollment. No identification or personal information is required from the parent, child, or teen. Many of the Summer Food sites will be providing free fun/learning activities for all who attend, in addition to a free healthy meal. Summer Food sites work with the USDA and the Oregon Department of Education to provide free meals. Therefore sites may vary in when and where meals are available. Also each site develops its own activities program based on the availability of resources. Where Are Summer Food Sites? All information about the SFSP sites and activities can also be found at the UCAN YES Google+ page, and www.summerfoodoregon.org/ or by calling 2-1-1, (541) 492-3927, (541) 580-4072, and 1-800-SAFENET. Who Benefits From The Summer Food Program? WE ALL DO!! Clearly all children and young adults are better off eating healthy food in the summer, especially those who depend on the subsidized school meals during the school year. Activity programs provide a positive outlet for a youth’s natural energy, promotes social and mental health, as well as physical well being. Young adults are encouraged to participate in the programs and/or help their community. Families with children and young adults benefit from these free programs. These days most families can use help stretching food budgets. Plus, youth who eat nutritious food are less likely to become ill. Not to mention having healthy children with safe, fun activities to keep them busy in the summer is a plus for the family and community. In addition to the personal benefits, the Summer Programs bring federal dollars back into the community. In 2011, Douglas County received $172,277 in federal money that was used to purchase food and supplies locally, for transportation costs, and to employ local residents. The USDA particularly encourages the use of locally grown produce. Interested In Helping? How can a civic group, organization, faith based organization, business, and/or yourself help make the Summer Food programs be more successful in your community? Get the word out! Post information about the Summer Food and Activities programs on your website, in your newsletter, and bulletin boards. Help provide fliers, signs, and other informational materials. Volunteer! These programs are valuable, fun, and benefit us all at no cost. Our children, young adults, communities, and local economy can always use our help. The more help we have, the more we can make happen! Transportation! Many children lack the access to these programs. Ask yourself, “How can we arrange safe, reliable transportation for these kids?” “We must become the change we want to see in the rest of the world” Gandhi
