U.S. Forest Service - Umpqua National Forest

U.S. Forest Service - Umpqua National Forest The Umpqua National Forest is nestled on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains.

Explosive geologic events shaped the distinctive landscape on the 983,129-acre forest, and provide spectacular scenery as well as an abundance of natural and cultural resources. Visitors discover a diverse place of thundering waters, high mountain lakes, heart-stopping rapids, and peaceful ponds. The Forest is characterized by its many waterfalls, including the 293-foot Watson Falls on the North U

mpqua Highway. The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests. http://www.nationalforests.org/โ€

The Forest Service manages a system of 155 national forests, 20 national grasslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife.

Umpqua National Forest will reduce the Castle Fire Closure effective Monday, August 17, 2026. Closure Order #06-15-02-26-03 begins at National Forest Service Road (NFSR) 28 from the junction of NFSR 2823 to French Junction, and NFSR 2823, or the areas known as Little Black Rock and Castle Creek. This closure will impact all trails, roads, and recreation areas within the closure area. The closure will remain in effect until conditions allow for safe reopening.

This new reduced closure does not impact South Umpqua Falls Campground and Day Use Area, which will reopen for recreation on August 17, 2026

Recreation sites that remain closed include Castle Creek Trailhead and Castle Creek Trail.

Transitioning to a Scan & Pay system reduces the workload for recreation staff while also cutting down on iron ranger theft and cash handling. It saves time for visitors, doesnโ€™t require recreators to carry cash or checks, and can still be used offline, making the payment process easier and more reliable for everyone.

Umpqua National Forest in partnership with Patriot Restoration Operations (PROPS) completed 25.8 miles of trail logout on the Tioga, Mott, Panther, Calf, and Marsters segments of the North Umpqua Trail (NUT). Skilled sawyers and hand crews cut and cleared complex, large diameter logs out of the trail. This work improved access for youth crews to perform trail maintenance, which is ongoing.

Segments of the North Umpqua Trail while open remain unclear. Debris, landslides, and damaged or missing bridges may be found along the trail. Please use caution when recreating on the NUT or consider hiking another trail. To view all the segments and trailheads that make up the 79-mile NUT visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/umpqua/recreation/groups/north-umpqua-trail-1414

Planning an adventure out on the Forest this weekend?

The Forest remains in Very High Fire Danger and Public Use Restrictions Stage 2. As an exemption to PURs Stage 2, campfires are only allowed in Forest-constructed fire rings within designated recreation areas.

Remember that even fires in Forest-constructed fire rings need to be dead out before leaving your campsite.

A new ๐ŸšฉPacific Northwest Fuels and Fire Behavior Advisory ๐Ÿšฉhas been issued by NWCC Predictive Services in conjunction with state and federal partners effective August 11, 2026.

Subject: Record low winter snowpack and ongoing drought have left live and dead fuels critically dry across the Northwest, resulting in accelerated curing and enabling aggressive fire behavior even without strong alignment of fuels, weather, and topography.

Summary:
โ€ข Low snowpack across much of Oregon and Washington has contributed to ongoing drought and critically dry fuels.
โ€ข Live fuels are contributing to increased fire behavior.
โ€ข Active fire behavior with longer burn periods are occurring, with continuous rangeland fuels allowing rapid rates of spread when winds align.
โ€ข Fires are showing extreme resistance to control, requiring substantial ground and aerial resource commitments for longer duration.

The full advisory can be viewed athttps://gacc.nifc.gov/nwcc/content/pdfs/Fuels_and_Fire_Behavior_Advisory_PNW_0811.pdf
