DFPA News Release: Fire Danger Increases

The Douglas Forest Protective Association has increased the fire danger to “HIGH” (Yellow) fire danger on all 1.6 million acres of private, county, state, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Affairs managed lands within the Douglas District, effective immediately. The Industrial Fire Precaution Level will remain at IFPL II.

Under DFPA’s Public Use Restrictions, a high fire danger reading changes the shutdown times for several activities for the general public. During high fire danger, the following activities are prohibited between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.:

• The cutting, trimming, or mowing of dried or cured grass. This restriction does not apply to the mowing of green lawns or for the commercial culture and harvest of agricultural crops.
• The cutting, grinding, or welding of metal on private property for non-industrial purposes.
• The use of power saws on private property for non-industrial purposes.
• Any non-industrial improvement or development taking place on private property that utilizes power driven machinery not specifically mentioned in the Public Use Restrictions.

All other restrictions listed under DFPA’s Public Use Restrictions remain in effect and unchanged. A complete list of DFPA’s Public Use Restrictions can be found online at www.dfpa.net/Public_Use_Restrictions_Color_Guide_2018.pdf or by calling DFPA’s 24 hour information line at 541-672-0379. Residents are reminded that additional restrictions or closures may be in place through private industrial landowners or public land management agency on the lands they own or manage.

To date, DFPA has suppressed 42 fires so far this year that have burned about 16 acres.

DFPA News Release: Fire Season Begins June 8th on DFPA Protected Land

The Douglas Forest Protective Association announced that the 2018 fire season will officially begin Friday, June 8th at 12:01 a.m. on all private, county, state, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands protected by DFPA. The declaration of fire season imposes certain fire restrictions on both the general public and industrial operators to help prevent wildfires.

With the declaration of fire season, the use of exploding targets and tracer ammunition are prohibited within the Douglas District. In addition, the use of Sky Lanterns are prohibited year-round in Oregon.

The start of fire season also means the end of unregulated outside debris burning for rural Douglas County residents. Due to poor burning conditions which have come earlier this year than normal, burn permits for debris piles and burn barrels will not be issued. Those wishing to burn yard debris before Friday are encouraged to exercise caution and are reminded to never leave the burn unattended. In addition, fire officials recommend checking any debris piles that were burned earlier this spring. If not properly extinguished, burn piles have the potential of smoldering for weeks, or even months, before popping back to life on a warm, windy day.

Fire season also means the start of industrial fire regulations. On Friday, the entire Douglas District will go into Industrial Fire Precaution Level I (one.) During IFPL I, smoking is prohibited while working on, or traveling through, an industrial operation. In addition, specified fire tools and suppression equipment must be on site and ready for use at all operations. A fire watch service is also required once work has completed for the day.

As fire season progresses, additional public and industrial fire restrictions may be imposed as fire conditions become more severe.

For more information about public or industrial fire restrictions on lands protected by DFPA, call DFPA’s Closure Information Line at 672-0379, or visit www.dfpa.net. An interactive map with state wide fire restrictions can also be viewed online at https://gisapps.odf.oregon.gov/firerestrictions/PFR.html
