What a special tribute to two of our very own members, Art and Marlene! ❤️
For the week of Valentine's Day, we are pleased to share info on some wonderful couples highlighted in our January/Mid-February edition of the Time of Your Life Digest.
Let's meet Art and Marlene Hamm from the Rosedale Senior Center.
Art and Marlene Hamm have been married since June 20th, 1964, having just celebrated 61 years together. “She’s put up with me a long time,” Art jests. Both Art and Marlene were originally from Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, where they met at a YWCA dance. The two’s paths almost never crossed, as Marlene was hesitant about attending the dance until her friend Beckie Hamm (no relation) encouraged her to go. There she met Art, and the two hit it off instantly, going on their first date soon after at the “makeout point” overlooking Lehigh University.
The couple moved to Baltimore shortly after, both employed with Bethlehem Steel – Art as a metallurgical engineer and Marlene as a purchasing administrator. When Art wound up serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in Vietnam, Marlene made the trip to Hawaii to spend time with him when he was on leave. Art recalls being promised leave time in Australia during his service, but it never manifested, leaving him with a longing desire to visit the continent. Two years ago, the couple achieved Art’s dream of finally visiting Australia together.
Art and Marlene say their secret to longevity is working together and ensuring that they “never go to bed mad” at each other. They also understand the need for space; Art likes to play golf regularly while Marlene plays card games at the local country club. “I’m out of her hair.” Art jokes. Art and Marlene still make time for each other, regularly goes to dinner
and fairs together.
