A few weeks ago, Officer Hubacher and Officer Wagner had the opportunity to meet with a local Boy Scout troop for a safety presentation and discussion. We always enjoy connecting with members of our community, especially young people who are eager to learn and ask great questions.

One of the highlights of the visit was a demonstration of our new drone technology, giving the troop an up-close look at how these tools assist us in keeping Rosemount safe.

Thank you to the troop leaders and scouts for inviting us to spend time with your group. We appreciate the opportunity to build relationships within our community and share a little about what we do every day!

On May 22nd, 1923, Night Watchman John Francis McDermott was shot in the line of duty. He had been filling in for the regular Rosemount Police Officer Joe Heinen, who was in the hospital as the result of an automobile accident. John McDermott would succumb to his wounds just five days later, on May 27th, 1923. McDermott, a WWI veteran and carpenter by trade, was u***d and just 27 years old.
On Monday night May 21st, 1923, Night Watchman McDermott began the evening covering the night shift for Officer Heinen and worked into the early morning hours of May 22nd. While on watch, McDermott saw a suspicious vehicle park near Bartelt’s Creamery (located near HWY 3 and Lower 147th Street West). In 1923, this was considered the south end of town. McDermott watched two men walk north “into town, arousing his suspicion”. He was aware that Officer Heinen had previously been threatened by several unnamed men.
McDermott woke three other “companions” to assist him and then hid in waiting near First National Bank (on 145th Street West and just west of HWY 3). A short time later, another car pulled into the Hynes Grain and Seed Store (just south of 145th Street West and HWY 3). Believing that it was the same suspicious car he spotted just moments before, McDermott approached the filling station. One of his comrades now arriving and not recognizing McDermott in the dark, shouted for him to stop, and fired a warning shot in the air. McDermott failed to realize the order was directed at him and kept moving towards the car. At that time, McDermott was mistakenly shot in the back while running across the street near Geraghty’s store (the building on the southwest corner of HWY 3 and 145th Street West) towards the filling station.
Numerous BBs penetrated McDermott’s head and lungs. He died several days later at Sanford Hospital in Farmington on May 27th. He received a military funeral and was laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rosemount, mere blocks from where he was shot.
RIP Rosemount Night Watchman John Francis McDermott.

On this Memorial Day, the Rosemount Police Department joins our community in honoring the American heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their service reminds us of the true cost of freedom and the strength of those who step forward to protect it.

As we gather with family and friends today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect, remember, and pay tribute to those who never came home.

Thank you to our fallen service members. Your sacrifice will always be remembered.

As Police Week comes to a close, we want to thank our community for taking the time to learn more about the people and roles within our department.

This week is about honoring those who serve, remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and recognizing the connections that make our community strong. We are proud to serve Rosemount and grateful for the continued support we receive throughout the year.

As we wrap up Police Week, we’d love to see your memories and connections with our department. If you have photos with our officers from community events, school visits, National Night Out, or other interactions over the years, share them in the comments below.

Thank you for standing with us.

Today we recognize participation in the Law Enforcement Memorial Bike Ride.

This ride honors officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made in this profession.

We are proud to support and recognize Sergeant McMenomy, who rode the long trek, and Retired Officer Ruesink, who was part of the support crew that kept things running smoothly. This meaningful event is especially impactful during Police Week.

If you are wondering why everyone is backward in the last photo, zoom in, and you will see the badge numbers of the never-forgotten heroes, Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge.

We will always remember and honor the fallen.

Today we highlight our Investigations Division.

Not all police work happens in the moment. Our investigators work behind the scenes, following leads, conducting interviews, and building cases to ensure accountability and justice.

Their work requires patience, attention to detail, and a commitment to seeing cases through.

Thank you to our investigators for the important work you do every day.

Today we honor and recognize our patrol division.

These are the officers you see every day—responding to calls, conducting traffic stops, and being present in our neighborhoods. They are often the first on scene, ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

Their work is fast-paced, unpredictable, and essential to keeping our community safe.

Thank you to our patrol officers for your dedication and service.
