Catch basins are everywhere you look, from busy roads to neighborhood streets. Ever wonder what may be down there? ๐Ÿ‘€

๐ŸŒง๏ธ They collect and drain water, but did you know they can also create the perfect environment for mosquitoes to breed?

Our technicians are on it! They travel all over Placer County, inspecting and treating catch basins for mosquito larvae. ๐ŸฆŸ

This season, their efforts resulted in an impressive 8,205 inspections and 5,879 treatments. So the next time you pass a catch basin, know that our team may have already been there, working behind the scenes to keep mosquitoes in check and lowering the risk for vector-borne diseases. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

๐Ÿฆ ๐ŸŒฟ As May comes to an end, weโ€™re wrapping up Lyme Disease Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’š

While learning about the risks, symptoms, and prevention of Lyme disease is important year-round, we hope you learned something new from our educational posts this month! ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿ”Ž

Some quick facts:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Lyme disease is an illness caused by Borrelia bacteria.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Not all ticks carry Lyme disease. In Placer County, Ixodes pacificus (Western black-legged) ticks are the primary known vector of Lyme disease.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Early detection and treatment are the most effective ways to help minimize the long-term effects of Lyme disease.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Wearing long sleeves and pants, using EPA-registered insect repellents, and avoiding tall grasses and brushy areas are some of the best ways to protect yourself while outside.

Awareness, prevention, and early action all play an important role in staying safe outdoors!

โ˜‚๏ธ It may almost be summer, but the rain returned for a brief encore.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ These unusual showers in Placer County create the perfect opportunity for pesky mosquitoes to lay their eggs in freshly filled containers. A friendly reminder to dump and drain standing water after the rain to help reduce mosquito breeding. Letโ€™s not give these mosquitoes a chance. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’ง

Have you seen any dead birds around lately?

If you find one, be sure to call the CA Department of Public Health hotline at 1-877-968-2473 โ˜Ž๏ธ or visit westnile.ca.gov ๐ŸŒ

๐ŸฆŸ West Nile virus (WNV) circulates in the environment between mosquitoes and birds. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread WNV to people and other animals through their bites. Humans are considered "dead-end hosts" in the WNV transmission cycle, meaning they do not spread the virus to other people or mosquitoes.

๐Ÿ“ข By reporting dead birds, you can help us identify and track WNV activity early, which is essential for protecting public health in our community.

Now that we all know just how tiny ticks can be ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ, itโ€™s no wonder these sneaky little critters can hitch a ride on your favorite trail buddy ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅพ

If youโ€™ve been out enjoying Placer County trails recently, chances are youโ€™ve come across a few ticks. Off-leash dogs can easily pick them up in tall grass and brushy areas ๐ŸŒฟ

Itโ€™s important to remember dogs can get Lyme disease too ๐Ÿพ While some dogs may not show symptoms, others can develop serious complications, including kidney problems.
