This past week, Resident Cherie Hannan provided our department with a very generous check for our K9 program, to be sure our new K9 partner Loki would have a bullet proof vest. She also provided fast food gift cards for all of our officers along with leashes, collars, dog toys and food for any stray dogs that we come across in our travels. Cherie recently lost her Mother, Patricia Hannan and did this in honor of her. Cherie, thank you for thinking of us and your generous donation. We are so very grateful. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

We have been receieving numerous calls on individuals operating pocket bikes/mopeds. Please be aware of the laws regarding these bikes. We have been and will continue to ticket individuals as well as impound these bikes as most are not street legal and are very unsafe. I know Motor Vehicle Code is no fun to read through, so here are the highlights:

-Any operator must have a valid moped or drivers license and be atleast 15 years of age.
-Anyone under the age of 19 must wear a helmet.
-For pocket bikes to be street legal, they must have a rear view mirror, muffler, handlbars 15 inches above the seat, front and rear -brakes and a horn.
-They must also have valid registration and are not allowed on sidewalks.

If a Pocket Bike has an engine displacement of 50cc's or less, produces 2.0 brake horsepower or less, has a top speed of no more than 30 mph, and the operator is not required/allowed to shift gears, then it may be legally classified as a moped (MCL 257.32b). The document titled "Moped Requirements" lists the operational and equipment requirements for such motor vehicles. Most "pocket bikes" will need to meet those requirements to be street legal. Requirements to make pocket bikes street legal, include a rear-view mirror, a muffler, handlebars at least 15 inches from the top of the seat, front and rear brakes and a horn.
Drivers of minibikes or mopeds must be at least 15 years of age and have a moped license (MCL 257.312a). Anyone riding a moped under the age of 19 must wear a helmet (MCL 257.658). All minibike drivers shall follow the rules of the road. To legally operate a moped on Michigan streets: The rider must have a valid driverโ€™s license or a moped license (MCL 257.312a) and the moped must have a valid registration sticker, which is good for three years, and affixed to the back. (MCL 257.801e).
A moped, low-speed vehicle, or commercial quadricycle shall not be operated on a sidewalk constructed for the use of pedestrians. (MCL 257.660(6))
