Important Attorney Update on John Mendoza, Jr.'s Death
Attorney Charles Adams recently met with Texas Rangers and John Mendoza, Sr. for a key update on the ongoing investigation. The meeting showed that law enforcement is focusing on charging Deputy Tippit with manslaughter, or accidental killing, rather than murder. Adams strongly disagrees with this direction. He believes the lesser charge is being pursued only because Tippit is a police officer.
The Rangers confirmed the existence of both dash camera and body-worn camera footage. They plan to share the videos with the family next week, a decision Adams supports for greater transparency. According to the Rangers, two Richwood police officers were at the park earlier that evening, but Tippit was not one of them. The young men were not involved in any criminal activity. They left the park on their own and later mistook Tippit for one of those officers. During the pursuit, John Jr. reached higher speeds than some earlier reports suggested.
At the end of the chase, Deputy Tippit approached the vehicle alone with his gun drawn. He raised the weapon and fired a single shot through the window, killing John Jr. without issuing any commands or warnings. Tippit claims he does not remember firing his weapon. The Rangers described it as a "sympathetic movement" and see no evidence for a murder charge. Adams argues that the actions shown on video amount to an unjustified use of deadly force. He believes that if anyone other than a police officer had done this, they would face murder charges. Adams is calling on District Attorney Tom Selleck to charge Deputy Tippit with murder to ensure full accountability.
